Library Sciences Scholarships

The Lindberg Research Fellowship Endowment, established in 2003, will provide a $10,000 grant, awarded annually by MLA through a competitive grant process. The purpose of this fellowship is to fund research aimed at expanding the research knowledgebase, linking the information services provided by librarians to improved health care and advances in biomedical research.

A scholarship for up to $5,000 will be granted to a student who is entering a Masters program at an ALA-accredited library school or who has yet to finish at least one half of the program's requirements in the year following the granting of the scholarship.

A scholarship for up to $5,000 will be granted to a minority student who is entering a Masters program at an ALA-accredited library school or has yet to finish at least one half of the program's requirements in the year following the granting of the scholarship. African American, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, or Pacific Islander American individuals who wish to study health sciences librarianship are eligible. The second winner is awarded the MLA Annual Meeting Scholarship for Minority Students for $1,000 and is sponsored by the National Program Committee to help support a minority student who aspires to become a medical librarian to attend the annual meeting.

The Medical Library Association (MLA) and the National Library of Medicine (NLM) jointly sponsor two scholarships through the American Library Association (ALA) Spectrum Initiative Scholarship program. This is funded by the National Library of Medicine under NLM Contract NO1-LM-1-3515 with the Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library. The two organizations make a total annual donation of $6,500 each year to support minority students in their goals to become health sciences information professionals. African American, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, or Pacific Islander individuals attending ALA-accredited library schools are eligible. Thomson Reuters sponsors a fellowship in the amount of $2,000 to foster and encourage superior students to conduct doctoral work in an area of health sciences librarianship or information sciences and to provide support to individuals who have been admitted to candidacy.The award supports research or travel applicable to the candidate's study within a twelve-month period. The award is given every other year and may not be used for tuition.

This award provides one individual $1500 to support a career development activity that will contribute to advancement in the field of medical informatics. The award was established in 1996 by the Medical Informatics Section.

To establish a permanent endowment fund, the income from which is to be applied for scholarship aid to NH residents in the study of library services.

A one-time only, preferred amount award of $3,000 to a student with a minimum 3.0 average at the third year level of undergraduate study or studying at the graduate level studying in the field of library science.Awards are based on academic merit, commitment to the field of study and financial need. No affiliation with DAR is necessary unless specified.Awards are placed on deposit with the college or university; any unused portion shall be returned to the National Society.

Eligibility: Awarded to an SAA member in good standing who is currently enrolled in an archival education program or who graduated from an archival education program in the previous calendar year. Applications are evaluated based on the merits of the applicant’s essay and letters of recommendation. If the scholarship is declined by an individual selected by the subcommittee, the subcommittee may select an alternate from the pool of applications received for that year. If, for any reason, the subcommittee is unable to select an awardee, it may choose not to award the scholarship for that year.

Purpose and Criteria for Selection: Established in 1993, this award recognizes and acknowledges minority undergraduate and graduate students, such as those of African, Asian, Latino or Native American descent, who, through scholastic and personal achievement, manifest an interest in becoming professional archivists and active members of the Society of American Archivists. This award supports the Society of American Archivists/Archivists and Archives of Color Roundtable objectives of: 1. identifying minority students enrolled in postsecondary educational institutions; 2. encouraging minority students to consider careers in the archival profession; and 3. promoting increased minority participation in SAA by exposing minority students to the experience of attending national meetings and encouraging them to join and remain members of the organization.Eligibility: Awarded to minority students, with preference given to full-time students possessing a minimum scholastic grade point average of 3.5 while enrolled in a graduate program focusing on archival management during the academic year preceding the date on which the award is given.

SLMSSENY is seeking applications from individuals who are:l. Students currently enrolled in a program leading to certification as a School Library Media Specialist-OR-2.New York State certified school library media specialists looking to further their professional growth and development through continuing education within the field of library studies/technology.ELIGIBILITY1. An applicant working towards an MLS degree must be a student member of SLMSSENY.2. An applicant continuing education within the field of library studies must be a regular member of SLMSSENY and a certified school library media specialist currently employed in the SLMSSENY seven county area.

The LITA/Ex Libris Student Writing Award is given for the best unpublished manuscript on a topic in the area of libraries and information technology written by a student or students enrolled in an ALA-accredited library and information studies graduate program.The purpose of this award, established July 2000, is to recognize superior student writing and to enhance the professional development of students through publication of the winning article in LITA's refereed journal, Information Technology and Libraries ( ITAL).The winner will receive $1,000 and a certificate. In the case of joint authorship, the award will be split among the authors and each will receive a certificate. The winning article will be published in a future issue of ITAL.The article can be written on any aspect of libraries and information technology, including digital libraries, metadata, authorization and authentication, electronic journals and electronic publishing, telecommunications, distributed systems and networks, computer security and intellectual property rights, technical standards, geographic information systems, software engineering, universal access to technology, futuristic forecasting, library consortia, vendor relations, and technology and the arts.Manuscripts will be selected based on the following criteria: relevance to libraries and information technology, timeliness, originality of ideas, persuasiveness of arguments, quality of writing, clarity of presentation, and contribution to the continuing education of the LITA membership. Manuscripts may be applicable to a variety of library settings, including public, academic, special libraries, school media centers, and library and information studies programs. Unselected manuscripts will be returned to the author(s).
