Computer Science Scholarships

Here are some of the Computer Science scholarships on our site for which you may qualify.

Richard E. Merwin Student Scholarship

IEEE Computer Society is offering $40,000 in student scholarships from $1,000 and up to recognize and reward active student volunteer leaders in student branches or chapters who show promise in their academic and professional efforts. This scholarship was created in honor of the late Richard E. Merwin, past president of the IEEE Computer Society, to recognize and reward student leadership. The selected winners of this award will have the opportunity to serve as IEEE Computer Society Student Ambassadors for the particular IEEE region to which they belong. Duties as Student Ambassadors will include collecting and disseminating information to student branches or chapters in their region and serving as a liaison between the IEEE Computer Society Member and Geographic Activities Board (MGAB) and student members in their region. Over a dozen scholarships of $1,000 and up are available, for one academic year (approximately 9 months). The Merwin Scholarship now has two application deadlines; Apr. 30th and Sep. 30th of each year (you may only apply once per year on either Apr. 30th and Sep. 30th). Who is Eligible? Graduate students, and those in the final two years of an undergraduate program in electrical or computer engineering, computer science, or a well-defined computer related field of engineering who are active members of a student branch or chapter are eligible. IEEE Computer Society membership is required. (Note: Students applying for the award should have a minimum one year in which to complete their degree, or be considering or enrolled to immediately start further study upon completion.) Applicants are required to have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 over 4.0 (or exam marks of at least 60%), and be a full-time student as defined by his or her academic institution during the course of the award. Student winners of the Computer Society's Richard Merwin or UPE/CS award for the previous year (13 months) are not eligible. Criteria? Evaluation criteria include participation in student IEEE branch/chapter activities (30%), academic achievement (30%), extracurricular activities (10%), letter of recommendation from student branch/chapter advisor (20%), and quality of Student Ambassador vision statement (10%). Google SVA Scholarship

At Google, we believe information should be universally accessible. Our education and scholarship programs aim to inspire and help students become future leaders in computing and technology by breaking down the barriers that prevent them from entering these fields. As part of commitment to military veterans, Google established the Google SVA Scholarship in partnership with Student Veterans of America. The scholarship provides assistance to student veterans who are pursuing university degrees in the field of computer science in the U.S. Selected students will receive 10,000 USD for the school year and will be invited to attend the Google Scholars’ Retreat in the summer. Who can apply? The Google Lime Scholarship

Selected students will receive 10,000 USD (for those studying in the US) or 5,000 CAD (for those studying in Canada) and will be invited to attend the Google Scholars’ Retreat in the summer. The Generation Google Scholarship

The Generation Google Scholarship was established to help aspiring computer scientists excel in technology and become leaders in the field. Selected students will receive 10,000 USD (for those studying in the US) or 5,000 CAD (for those studying in Canada) for the school year. As part of the scholarship, current high school seniors who are entering their first year of university will be required to attend Google’s Computer Science Summer Institute (CSSI). Current undergraduate or graduate students will be invited to attend the Google Scholars’ Retreat in the summer. Who can apply? Buildium’s Build U. Scholarship

Buildium’s Build U. Scholarship awards one $2,000 prize each semester to the Product Design, Interaction Design, Engineering, or Computer Science student who best explains how having a shared set of beliefs is important for building a great company. The catch: You’ve got 1,000 words. Keep it short and sweet, but make it powerful and compelling. Then email your essay to scholarship@buildium.com. We’ll read all the essays and pick the one that best exemplifies how shared beliefs can build a better company. That’s it. Now get writing! Scholarship details: Two $2,000 cash scholarships will be awarded. One scholarship will be awarded in the fall, another in the spring. Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee made up of members of the Buildium Marketing team, with input from other teams. The decision of the committee will be based on originality and quality of writing. Submission deadlines: April 1 (spring) and October 1 (fall) Scholarship requirements: College or university student in good standing at an accredited public or private university. AP-Google Scholarship

The AP-Google Journalism and Technology Scholarship Program fosters new journalism skills in undergraduate and graduate students developing projects at the intersection of journalism and technology. Our goal: To shine a light on the hidden treasures in schools across the country — the digital-minded journalists who will be the future of our industry. The program is targeted to individual students creating innovative projects that further the ideals of digital journalism. A key goal is to promote geographic, gender and ethnic diversity, with an emphasis on rural and urban areas. Have you created original journalistic content with computer science elements? Are you thinking up new ways to tell a story with technology? Are you a “techie” who knows how to construct a journalistic story through multimedia? We’re looking for students pursuing studies at the crossroads of journalism, computer sciences and new media. If you’re on the cutting edge of digital media beyond the classroom, this scholarship is for you! Students from diverse backgrounds, as well as those attending rural-area institutions, are strongly encouraged to apply. A selected number of scholarships will be based on financial need. AWARD Six students will receive scholarship awards of $20,000 each. Half of the award will be granted in the first semester. The remainder will be awarded in the second semester upon proof of project proposal update and maintenance of a 3.0 GPA. Awards will be made payable to the post-secondary institution. Scholarship winners also will receive a one-year ONA membership and recognition at ONA’s annual conference. STEM Majors Scholarship for Underserved Students

Scholarships of $5,000 will be awarded to full-time students pursuing an undergraduate degree in an eligible major and currently enrolled in an accredited Historically Black College or University (HBCU) institution in the United States. Distance-learning or online programs affiliated with one of these institutions are eligible. Candidates must be at least second-year college students, enrolled full time as sophomores or juniors at the time of application. Scholarships of $3,000 will be awarded to full-time graduate students currently working toward a master's degree in an eligible major. Graduate students are not required to be enrolled in an HBCU institution. Distance-learning or online programs will not qualify. Eligibility: NOTE: Degree-seeking candidates must be U.S. citizens. Undergraduate students must be currently enrolled and attending either a two-year or four-year accredited HBCU institution in the United States. Students also may be enrolled in an accredited distance-learning or online degree program affiliated with one of these institutions. Applications will be accepted from qualified sophomore and junior students (minimum second-year students only) enrolled full-time in an eligible degree-seeking program. Eligible majors include the following or related STEM subjects: electrical, aerospace, systems or computer engineering; computer engineering technology; computer information systems; information systems management; computer science; physics; or mathematics. Majors directly related to the support of U.S.intelligence or homeland security enterprises with relevance to the mission of AFCEA will also be eligible. Graduate-level eligible degree programs include the following or related fields of electrical, electronics, chemical, systems or communications engineering; physics; mathematics; computer science; technology management; or information technology. An overall GPA of 3.0 (or equivalent) is required. Special consideration will be given to military enlisted candidates/military veterans. Disabled War Veterans Scholarship

Scholarships of $2,500 will be offered to active-duty service personnel, honorably discharged U.S. military veterans, reservists, and National Guard personnel who are disabled because of wounds received during combat service in Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan or Iraqi Freedom Operations. Candidates must be actively pursuing an undergraduate degree in an eligible major at accredited two- or four-year institutions in the United States. Distance-learning or online programs affiliated with a major U.S. institution are eligible. The AFCEA Disabled War Veterans Scholarships are funded by generous contributions from Microsoft employees with matching funds from Microsoft, the AFCEA Camp Pendleton Chapter, and the AFCEA Educational Foundation. Eligibility: Applications are requested from U.S. Armed Forces and National Guard personnel, either currently on active-duty or honorably discharged veterans, or reservists who are disabled because of wounds received after service in either Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan or Iraqi Freedom. Applicants must be currently enrolled and attending either a two- or four-year accredited college or university in the United States. Students may also be enrolled in an accredited distance-learning or online degree program affiliated with a major, accredited two- or four-year college or university in the United States. Applications will be accepted from qualified sophomores and juniors, and senior undergraduate students enrolled either part-time or full-time in an eligible degree program. Candidates must be majoring in the following or related fields: electrical, aerospace, systems or computer engineering; computer engineering technology; computer information systems; information systems management; computer science; physics; mathematics; or science or mathematics education. Majors directly related to the support of U.S. intelligence or homeland security enterprises with relevance to the mission of AFCEA are also eligible. No minimum GPA requirement. Primary factors considered in the selection process are demonstrated academic excellence, leadership, and financial need. Afghanistan and Iraq War Veterans Scholarship

Scholarships of $2,500 are offered to active-duty and honorably discharged U.S. military veterans and reservists and National Guard personnel of the Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan or Iraqi Freedom Operations. AFCEA Military Personnel Scholarships

Merit-based scholarships of varying amounts will be awarded to persons on active duty in the uniformed military services, to honorably discharged U.S. military veterans (including Reservists and National Guard personnel), and to disabled veterans who are currently enrolled part time or full time in an eligible degree program at an accredited two- or four-year college or university in the U.S. Eligible candidates must be at least second-year college students enrolled full time as sophomores or juniors in four-year institutions at the time of application. All candidates must provide a copy of Certificate of Service, Discharge Form DD214, copy of latest performance review or other verification of service. (Please black out your Social Security Number when submitting.) Distance-learning or online programs affiliated with a major U.S. institution are eligible. Eligibility: Applicants must be: 1. U.S. citizen 2. Currently enrolled and attending either a two-year or four-year accredited college or university in the United States 3. An undergraduate student enrolled at the time of application 4. Enrolled part time or full time in an eligible degree program An overall 3.0 GPA is required. Candidates must be majoring in the following or C4I-related fields of electrical, aerospace, systems or computer engineering; computer engineering technology; computer network systems; information systems security; computer information systems; information systems management; technology management; electronics engineering technology; computer science; physics; or mathematics. Intelligence Scholarships

Intelligence Scholarships of $2,250 (undergraduate) and $5,000 (graduate) will be awarded to students enrolled full-time in degree-granting programs in fields directly related to the support of U.S. intelligence or homeland security enterprises, and/or foreign languages.* *Distance-Learning or Online programs affiliated with a major U.S. institution are eligible. Eligibility: Applications are requested from qualified sophomore and junior undergraduate students and graduate students enrolled full time in an eligible degree-granting program. Must be at least second-year student, regardless of academic hours accumulated. Applicants must be currently enrolled at the time of application in a two-year or four-year accredited college or university in the United States. Distance-learning programs are eligible. U.S. citizenship required. A minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is required. Candidates must be majoring in a field directly related to the support of U.S. intelligence or homeland security enterprises with relevance to the mission of AFCEA such as global security and intelligence studies, foreign languages, computer science information technology, or electronic engineering. These are merit scholarships based on demonstrated academic excellence, leadership, and financial need. Cyber Security Certification Scholarships

Cyber Security Certification Scholarships of $1,000 will be awarded to Young AFCEAN** candidates currently pursuing a certification such as those required by DOD 8570.01-M. Enrollment in an AFCEA Professional Development Center (PDC) Cyber Security course is eligible. **A Young AFCEAN is an AFCEA member under the age of 40. Eligibility: Applications are requested from qualified sophomore, junior or senior undergraduate students and graduate students enrolled full time in an eligible degree-granting program. Must be at least second-year student, regardless of academic hours accumulated. Applicants must be currently enrolled at the time of application in a two-year or four-year accredited college or university in the United States. Distance-learning programs are eligible. U.S. citizenship required. A minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is required. Candidates must be majoring in a field directly related to the support of U.S. cyber security enterprises with relevance to the mission of AFCEA such as cyber security, cyber attack, computer science, digital forensics, information technology, or electronic engineering. These are merit scholarships based on demonstrated academic excellence, leadership, and financial need. Important: PLEASE NOTE: Two letters of reference are required.
