History Scholarships

The Birgit Baldwin Fellowship in French Medieval History was established in 2004 by John W. Baldwin and Jenny Jochens in memory of their daughter Birgit. It is endowed through the generosity of her family. The Baldwin Fellowship provides a grant of $20,000 to support a graduate student in a North American university who is researching and writing a significant dissertation for the Ph.D. on any subject in French medieval history that can be realized only by sustained research in the archives and libraries of France. The fellowship helps defray research and living expenses for the equivalent of an academic year of study. It may be renewed for a second year upon demonstration of satisfactory progress. The fellowship recipient must devote full time to the dissertation project and may not hold any job or teaching position or work on another project during the term of the fellowship. Phi Alpha Theta is pleased to announce the continuation of our annual doctoral scholarship grants for advanced study by Phi Alpha Theta graduate student members who are working on a Ph.D. in History and who have passed general examinations:

Lilly Fellows are appointed for two years at a rank equivalent to that of assistant professor. The salary is $41,000 for the coming academic year, plus standard benefits, a moving allowance and an annual travel allowance to attend conferences. Fellows are expected to be in local residence throughout the terms of their appointments. These teaching Fellowships are open to new scholar-teachers interested in the relationship between Christianity and the academic vocation and seriously considering a career at a church-related college or university. Research or dissertation topics are not restricted to religion. Fellows will be recruited from the following disciplines: art and art history; creative writing; history; interdisciplinary studies; languages and literatures; music and music history; philosophy; religion; rhetoric; theater history and theater arts. Candidates will be asked to demonstrate their interest in the goals of the Lilly Fellows Program and a sense of commitment to explore teaching and scholarship as a Christian vocation.

The Russian Orthodox Theological Fund, established in 1955, is a non-profit lay organization assisting the Church in the education of pastors. ROTF provides scholarships to candidates for the priesthood and financial assistance to researchers, authors, and publishers in theology, history, and liturgical music. Scholarship applications must be submitted through a seminary.

Members of one of the following groups: African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, or American Indians, and are U.S. citizens or Permanent Residents. Candidates must have completed all course work leading to the doctorate and must be considering a career in college teaching in one of the following fields: Business (Family Business, Sustainable Organizations); Education (Educational Philosophy and Foundations, Research Methods, Higher Education and Student Affairs); English; Chemistry; History (African American, California, Islamic World, 18th-19th Century Europe); Information Systems; Mathematics; Nursing (Adult Surgical Nursing); Organizational Development/Behavior; Philosophy; Public Administration; or Theology and Religious Studies. Pending funding, the Program provides a stipend of $32,000 and limited support for relocation and research-related expenses. The University of San Francisco invites applications from underrepresented scholars for the USF Dissertation Fellowship Program. Program: Scholars complete the dissertation and initiate an ongoing program of scholarly or creative work, and become familiar with the usual service responsibilities of a university faculty member. Scholars teach one course in the discipline each semester and serve the University in various capacities. Additional support includes office space, computer and library privileges. The University of San Francisco is a Jesuit Catholic University founded in 1855 to educate leaders who will fashion a more humane and just world. Established in honor of AIA Honorary President Jane Waldbaum, this scholarship is intended to help students who are planning to participate in archaeological field work for the first time. Students majoring in archaeology or related disciplines are especially encouraged to apply. The Scholarship Fund provides $1000 each to help pay expenses associated with participation in an archaeological field work project (minimum stay one month/4 weeks). The scholarship is open to students who have begun their junior year of undergraduate studies at the time of application and have not yet completed their first year of graduate school at a college or university in the United States or Canada. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and must not have previously participated in archaeological field work of any kind. The committee will consider both academic achievement and financial need in its deliberations. AIA scholarships are open to students from all backgrounds. The Waldbaum Scholarship will be awarded to junior and senior undergraduates and first-year graduate students only. The scholarship is intended to provide total financial support for highly-motivated minority students (African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic, Native American and people of color) who are citizens for four years of study who wish to pursue a career in the newspaper industry. This scholarship is for four-years of study in any one of the following areas of study: Journalism, Mass Communications, Economics, English, Accounting, Political Science, History, Public Policy, Urban Studies, Advertising. Cox Enterprises Inc., a multi media company headquartered in Atlanta, offers a full paid, four year scholarship to high school seniors who will graduate from the metro school system served by one of the following newspapers: West Palm Beach Post (Florida), Austin-American Statesman (Texas), and Atlanta Journal-Constitution (Georgia). Only one scholarship is offered each calendar year and only one newspaper is selected to administer the program.
