Health Care Scholarships

Here are some of the Health Care scholarships on our site for which you may qualify.

Dr. Charles W. Buggs Award

The College of Allied Health's highest award, named after the prominent microbiologist and first dean of the College of Allied Health at Drew University, is presented to the graduating senior who has maintained the highest GPA throughout his or her training and has exemplified the personal characteristics of competence and compassion.

Dr. Jack Mitchell Award

Named for a community physician who was an early advocate of allied health education at Drew University. This award is presented to the graduating senior who has demonstrated leadership among his or her peers in college and university activities and in the provision of health care to community residents.

Dr. Raymond Kivel Award

This award, named for the medical director under whose leadership the MEDEX Physician Assistant Program attained nationwide prominence, is presented to the graduating senior whose voluntary community service has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to the delivery of health care in medically underserved communities.

Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Award

Named in honor of the outstanding educator, whose life and legacy serves as an inspiration to all, this award is presented to the graduating senior who has demonstrated the ability to persist in the face of adversity.

Dr. Charles R. Drew Award (Gold Medal)

The College of Medicine's highest award, this honor is presented to the graduating senior who, in the opinion of the faculty, has most exemplified a combination of compassion and academic excellence over all years of training. Winners of this award perform in a manner exemplary of the institution's Mission, as manifested in academic achievement in basic science and clinical coursework. Awardees also demonstrate compassion in clinical service. The winner of this award is selected by the Awards Committee, with input from the senior class.

Dr. Mitchell Spellman Award (Gold Medal)

This medal, named for the first Dean of the College of Medicine, is presented to the graduating senior who has demonstrated unique and noteworthy achievement, not necessarily in the field of medicine. The recipient may also meet the criteria for several of the College of Medicine

Dr. Geraldine Burton-Branch Award (Silver Medal)

Named for a physician who resides in the community served by the King/Drew Medical Center, this medal is presented to the graduating senior who has demonstrated outstanding performance in the primary care course over the clinical years. The winner of this award is selected by the Primary Care Committee.

Dr. Carlos Juan Finlay Award (Silver Medal)

This award, named for the Cuban physician who discovered the role of the Aedes aegypti mosquito in the transmission of yellow fever, is presented to the graduating senior who has most exemplified excellence in community service or public health. The winner of this award is selected by the Awards Committee, with input from the senior class.

Non-Campus-Based Scholarships

Throughout the year, the College receives announcements on scholarship opportunities offered to allied health students by different organizations. Information regarding these scholarships may be obtained from the campus Financial Aid Office or the office of student affairs. Please do keep in mind that these scholarships have different deadlines and submission requirements and addresses.

W.K. Kellogg Foundation Doctoral Fellowship in Health Policy

National Medical Fellowships, Inc. has established a doctoral fellowship program to create a cadre of health researchers with a focus in one of our areas: health policy, men's health, mental health, and substance abuse. The program will award fellowships to talented minority men or women enrolled in graduate programs in public health, health policy or social policy leading to the doctorate (Ph.D., Dr.P.H., or Sc.D.). The fellowship will provide the opportunity to complete advanced training in research methodology, including quantitative and qualitative methods. The expectation is that the Fellows who graduate from the program will be a resource for government agencies, managed care organizations, community health centers, research institutions and academia. Only applicants who have been accepted for admission to the following schools will be considered for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation Doctoral Fellowship in Health Policy. Heller Graduate School of Brandeis University Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University Harvard School of Public Health Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health RAND Graduate School UCLA School of Public Health University of Michigan School of Public Health University of Pennsylvania AWARD The fellowship award will cover tuition, fees and a partial living stipend for up to five years. Morris K. Udall Scholarship

Purpose: The Morris K. Udall Scholarship and Excellence in National Environmental Policy Foundation awards approximately 75 scholarships annually to students pursuing careers related to environmental public policy, or who are Native Americans or Alaska Natives pursuing careers related to health care or tribal public policy.

TYLENOL® Future Care Scholarship

The is awarded based on leadership qualities, academic excellence and community involvement. - Eligible students must be pursuing healthcare-related degrees - 40 students will receive $5,000 or $10,000 in scholarship funds - Applications must be received by May 31, 2013 - Winners will be selected in July and scholarships will be delivered by August 31, 2013 - Eligible students must have completed at least one year of undergraduate or graduate course study by the Spring of 2013 at an accredited two or four year college, university or vocational-technical school
