Science Scholarships

Here are some of the Science scholarships on our site for which you may qualify.

A.T. Anderson Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to members of AISES who are American Indian/Alaskan Native college students. Students must be pursuing academic programs in the sciences, engineering, natural resources. The awards are $1,000 and $2,000 for undergraduates and graduates, respectively. Requirements: 1. Applicant must be a student member of AISES. 2. Applicant must be at least 1/4 American Indian/Alaskan Native and/or recognized as a member by a tribe. 3. Applicant must major in one of the disciplines listed above. 4. Applicant must be a full-time undergraduate (12 hours/semester or quarter) or graduate (9 hour/semester or quarter) student at an accredited four year college/university of full-time student at a two-year college enrolled in a program leading to an academic degree. 5. Must have a 2.0 cumulative grade point average, minimum.

Al Qoyawayma Award

Requirements: 1) Must be a full time undergraduate at accredited four year college/university or full time student at a two year college enrolled in a program leading to an academic degree; 2) Must be majoring either in science or engineering and have demonstrated outstanding interest and skill in any one of the arts; 3) Must demonstrate a commitment to serving the community or other tribal nations; 4) Must American Indian or Alaska Native, and must provide proof of tribal enrollment; 5) Must demonstrate financial need.

NDSEG Fellowship Program

The NDSEG Fellowship Program is open only to applicants who are citizens or nationals of the United States. Persons who hold permanent resident status are not eligible to apply. NDSEG Fellowships are intended for students at or near the beginning of their graduate studies in science or engineering. Applicants must receive or be on track to receive their baccalaureate degrees by the upcoming Fall. Preference to applicants pursuing doctoral study and research in aeronautical and astronautical engineering, biosciences (including toxicology), chemical engineering, chemistry, cognitive, neural and behavioral sciences, computer science, electrical engineering, geosciences, materials science and engineering, mathematics, mechanical engineering, naval architecture and ocean engineering, oceanography, and physics (includes optics). Recommended GPA is 3.0 and higher. Applications are encouraged from women, persons with disabilities and minorities, including ethnic minority groups such as American Indian, Black, Hispanic, Native Alaskan (Eskimo or Aleut) or Pacific Islander (Polynesian or Micronesian). NDSEG Fellows may choose as their fellowship institutions appropriate United States institutions of higher education offering advanced degrees in science or engineering. During part of their tenure, fellows may study or engage in research or field work away from their academic institutions if, in the judgment of the faculty, such arrangements further the fellow's education and contribute directly to the attainment of an advanced degree, and the fellow is officially enrolled and earning academic credit.

Office of Naval Research Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

Citizenship: Participants selected for support under the ONR Postdoctoral Fellowship Program must be citizens of the United States. Security Clearance: Participants must be eligible for a Department of Defense security clearance of Secret. In most cases, participants will be permitted to do research pending completion of the security clearance. All appointments are contingent upon Fellows obtaining the appropriate level of security clearance. Education and Experience: Before appointment, participants must present evidence of having received the Ph.D., Sc.D., or other earned doctoral degree recognized in U.S. academic circles as equivalent to the Ph.D. within seven years of the date of application, or must present acceptable evidence of having completed all formal academic requirements for one of these degrees. Prior Fellowships: A person who has received a prior postdoctoral fellowship at a navy laboratory under any program may not be eligible to participate in the ONR Postdoctoral Program at the same laboratory. SIL Dibner Library Resident Scholar Program

Applicants must have serious interests that are appropriate for the Dibner Library of the History of Science and Technology, although other Smithsonian and Washington area collections may also be used. The description of the proposed research must make clear and specific the need for access to specific Dibner Library holdings, through such means as a bibliography of titles to be consulted or a description of specific collections. Records for titles located in the Dibner Library are available through OCLC, a national bibliography data base available through nearly 14,000 libraries nationwide. In addition, the Libraries' online catalog, SIRIS, can be searched directly via the Internet. Use telnet and the following address: http://www.sil.si.edu. Scholars will be selected based on: - the quality of the proposal (importance of topic, originality and sophistication of approach, feasibility of research objectives, relevance to the collections); and - evidence of applicant's ability to carry out the proposed research (as outlined in letters of reference, reviews of previous work, publication record, etc.) Applicants whose native language is not English must be able to demonstrate the ability to write and converse fluently in English.

SHPE Foundation Scholarship

Open to all minorities who demonstrate financial need and who are enrolled or about to be enrolled full time in an engineering or science program. Preference is given to SHPE members, students who demonstrate high community and school involvement and high academic achievement.

GCA Awards in Tropical Botany

This is a grant to enable field study in tropical botany. Open to Ph.D. candidates. Funds two students annually at $5,500 each.

Aerospace Undergraduate STEM Research Scholarship Program

The VSGC Undergraduate STEM Research Scholarship Program provides awards of up to $8,500 to rising juniors and seniors who are enrolled full-time in a program of study in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) and have a specific faculty-mentored research project that has NASA or aerospace relevance. Awards are one-year, non-renewable scholarships. Students may apply for the following: a $3,000 student stipend during the academic year and/or a $3,500 stipend during summer (must be specified in application) plus, $1,000 research allocation for materials and travel to support research activities conducted during the academic year and/or $1,000 research allocation during the summer (if doing summer research). The maximum award per year cannot exceed $8,500. This is a competitive scholarship program, funded by NASA and the Commonwealth of Virginia contributions, with the goals of: Promoting undergraduate aerospace research while recognizing high academic achievement and promise Increasing participation of underrepresented minorities, females and students with disabilities in aerospace-related careers Implementing the goals of the Virginia Space Grant Consortium and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Eligibility: Must be U.S. citizen Must enrolled as a full-time student (minimum 12 credit hours) at one of the five Virginia Space Grant Consortium member institutions Must have completed at least two years of a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) undergraduate program and be classified as a junior or senior during the academic year (must have at least junior status by summer if choosing this option) Must be in a program of study demonstrating an interest in aerospace or supporting NASA’s mission Must have a grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale Please check the website for any changes in deadline of application

Aerospace Graduate STEM Research Fellowship Program

The Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSGC) Graduate Research STEM Fellowship Program provides fellowships of $5,000 in add-on support to graduate students to supplement and enhance basic research support. Applicants must be Student at NASA enrolled full-time in a program of study in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) and have a specific faculty-mentored research project that has NASA or aerospace relevance. The purpose of the VSGC Graduate STEM Rresearch Fellowship program is to encourage talented individuals to pursue careers in the aerospace industry that support NASA’s mission. Awardees will be required to certify through their academic department that basic research support of at least $5,000 in matching funds is also being provided before funds are released. These Fellowships are intended to enhance basic graduate support such as graduate research assistanships, graduate teaching assistanships, and non-federal scholarships and fellowships. Graduate Research Fellowships require that students participate in an active faculty-mentored research experience that aligns with the aerospace sector and meets NASA’s mission. Awards are made annually and are renewable for one year for students making satisfactory academic and research progress. This is a competitive fellowship program and awards are based on merit recognizing high academic achievement and promise. Goals: Encouraging undergraduate students in STEM and aerospace-related fields of study to continue to the graduate level Promote graduate aerospace-related research, while recognizing high academic achievement and promise Increasing participation of underrepresented minorities, females and students with disabilities in aerospace-related careers Implementing the goals of the Virginia Space Grant Consortium and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Eligibility: Must be a U.S. citizen Must be enrolled as a full-time graduate student at one of the Virginia Space Grant Consortium member institutions May apply prior to entering or anytime during your graduate program Must be in a program of study demonstrating an interest in aerospace or supporting NASA’s mission Must have a grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale Please check the website for any changes in deadline of application.

TOCA Publisher's Scholarship

The Turf and Ornamental Communicators Association will award two $1,000 fall semester scholarships to undergraduate college students pursuing a career in green industry communications. To qualify, students must be majoring or minoring in technical communications or a green industry related field such as horticulture, plant sciences, botany, agronomy, plant pathology, etc. The applicant also must demonstrate an interest in using this course of study in the field of communications.

Jessup and McHenry Awards

Jessup Funds are awarded competitively to students wishing to conduct studies at the postgraduate, doctoral and postdoctoral levels under the supervision or sponsorship of a member of the curatorial staff of the Academy. The Awards are not available for undergraduate study. Such studies can be in any specialty in which these curators have expertise. The McHenry Fund is similarly intended but is restricted to botanists. Please note that the awards are restricted to those who wish to conduct their study here at the academy. These awards are intended to assist predoctoral and postdoctoral students within several years of receiving their Ph.D's. Students commuting within the Philadelphia area are ineligible. A Jessup-McHenry student is expected to give a seminar after his or her arrival, and is encouraged to publish at least some of his/her qork accomplished at the Academy. Round-trip travel costs up to a total of $500 for North American (including Mexico and the Carribean) applicants, and $1,000 for applicants from other parts of the world, are allowed. The stipend for subsistence is $250 per week. Minimum duration of an award is two weeks; the maximum is sixteen weeks. Provision of scientific supplies and equipment is the responsibility of the sponsoring curator and the student.

Undergraduate Student Fellowships

This program is open to students who have been or will be enrolled in any accredited institution within six months of the start of their fellowship. Institutional affiliation and citizenship restrictions may apply for some awards or facilities. It is expected that applicants will have completed one year of college by the start of their fellowship. Applicants will be reviewed on the basis of academic performance and class standing, career goals, recommendations, and compatibility of scientific interests and abilities with the needs and resources of the host facility. The fellowship term is normally eight to sixteen weeks. Renewals are competitive and require an updated application. A fellowship award includes placement on a project at a facility with a usual stipend of at least $300 per week, and may include an allowance for travel to and from the facility. Sponsors may augment the award and provide additional allowances for fellowships at the facility or on campus. Fellows will receive a certificate of participation at the end of their appointment. Participants are encouraged to seek academic credit at their home institution.
