Photography Scholarships

$8,000 four-year scholarship Ideal candidates have been a member of AQHA or AQHYA for at least one year and are pursuing a college degree in journalism or communications. Recipient must pursue a career in news, editorial or print journalism, photojournalism or a related field. Member must apply during their senior year of high school or while enrolled as a freshman at an accredited college or university. Recipient must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.5 grade point average. Current or previous AQHF scholarship recipients are not eligible to receive this scholarship. Funding for this scholarship will be applied to a four-year undergraduate degree program as specified above.

A limited number of scholarship awards are available for new students (entering freshmen or transfer students) The application period is March 2-31. The application will be available on March 1. Please submit a portfolio that includes 10-12 examples of your original artwork. You may submit original artworks (drawings, photos, etc.) or high-quality digital reproductions of original work; web portfolios or a CD portfolio of your artwork are acceptable. All portfolios will be returned. Also submit: • ACT scores • Transcript(s) of your grades • A letter of recommendation • An application letter that discusses your art interests and career plans New student application packets must be received no later than March 31, for scholarship award consideration. Applications missing any aspect of this process will not be considered. If this standard is not met, the award is subject to withdrawal at the discretion of the Art Department faculty.

Catherine W. Pierce scholarship was established to support students who are majoring in disciplines within the Arts and/or History. Mrs. Pierce had a great interest in helping deserving students pursue the fields of Art or History. The award amount is up to $5,000.  Applicants must be a Hawai`i island, public high school graduate  Must be a declared art major to include, but not limited to focuses in art history, ceramics, drawing and painting, electronic arts, fiber, glass, graphic design, photography, printmaking, sculpture General criteria: • Must be a classified undergraduate student • Enrolled in a degree-seeking program, unless specifically noted • Enrolled in a two- or four-year, accredited* college institution in Hawai`i or the continental U.S. • Full-time status, unless specifically noted • Demonstrate interest in Hawaiian language, culture, history • Demonstrate a commitment to contribute to the greater community. *See website for accrediting bodies that are recognized by the Foundation. Applications are open to the general public. However, it is the policy of the Pauahi Foundation to give preference to applicants of Hawaiian ancestry to the extent permitted by law.

To provide financial assistance and promotion of Asian American college students pursuing a major in the performing, visual arts, journalism and/or mass communications. Awards: $1,000 to be applied toward school tuition and fees General Eligibility Requirements: Must be of at least 50% Asian and/or Pacific Islander ethnicity Must be a citizen, national or legal permanent resident of the U.S Must be either a high school senior or a college student currently enrolled full-time at an accredited U.S. vocational, junior college, or four-year college/university and must be a full-time, degree seeking student by the upcoming academic calendar year and pursuing a major in the visual/performing arts (film, theatre, fashion, photography, graphic design, dance, music, journalism, mass communications, etc.) Have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular, or other activities Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (unweighted) Family members of Board members are ineligible Selection Criteria: Selection is based on a rating system judged in five major categories. The candidate with the highest combined cumulative points will receive the scholarship. These categories are: Quality of content submission (essay, artistic portfolio) Academic performance Leadership/community service experience and contribution Letters of recommendation Phone/in-person committee interview Please note that those Scholarship Winners will be invited to attend our annual charity event, Fashion for a Passion held in Fall in Dallas, Texas. Fashion for a Passion is our biggest event of the year which helps to raise money for our charitable causes as well as for the current scholarship. The presence of scholarship winners is highly encouraged. Funds will be disbursed directly to the educational institution in the student’s name.

The Stanford Chen Internship Fund Grant supports college students needing help to bridge some of the costs that might otherwise keep them from taking an internship and expanding their journalism skills in an internship. AAJA awards one or more news internship grant(s) of $1,750 to current college juniors, seniors and graduate students. The grants are for print, online, broadcast or photography interns at any-sized media outlets (though APPLICANTS interning at small- to medium-sized outlets will be given priority). Eligibility and Rules: 1. Applicants have a serious interest in pursuing journalism as a career. 2. Applicants must have already secured a summer internship before applying for the internship grant. The stipend is to be used toward living expenses and/or transportation during your internship. Accepted applicants will be required to sign a waver acknowledging this. 3. AAJA student membership is strongly encouraged for all applicants, but not required to apply. Those selected to receive grants will be required to sign up for AAJA student membership.
