News Media Scholarships

This journalist scholarship program consists of one $2,500 scholarship, made payable directly to the winning student’s educational institute. The winning student must also be able to attend AWMF’s Gracies Awards Luncheon on June 22, 2015 in New York City to receive the scholarship. Female undergraduate and graduate students studying media, journalism, English, communications and related fields are encouraged to apply. Submission Requirements: Please submit a writing piece of 750 to 1,000 words, focusing on the theme Opening Doors to Opportunity for 25 Years. The piece should center on the accomplishments that have taken place since ADA passed in 1990 and the differences it has made in the lives of people with disabilities. The piece can be written in first or third person. If you have a personal connection to the subject matter, please indicate either within the essay or via cover sheet. Societal views, mobility, advocacy, etc.  What were some of the challenges that people with disabilities experienced?  What is it like now, 25 years later? What are the differences/advancements?  How have the views of Americans changed toward those with disabilities? Application Requirements: You must be a full-time, female undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited college or university. Established in 1997 by A.G. Hiebert, GCI and other private donors. The Cap Lathrop Broadcast and Telecommunications Scholarship is for eligible Alaska Native original enrollees/descendants to an ANCSA regional or village corporation. Preference is given to Native original enrollees/descendants of Cook Inlet Region, Inc. An applicant must be a declared major in broadcast, telecommunications, business, engineering, journalism, or other media related degree programs to be considered.

The first set of scholarships is for students currently enrolled in college or graduate school: Applicants must: Be enrolled in an accredited college or university within the ADI (area of dominant influence) of the television markets within the Chicago/Midwest chapter jurisdiction OR have your primary residence (home address) within the ADI of the television markets within the Chicago/Midwest chapter jurisdiction OR be a relative of a member in good standing of the Chicago/Midwest Chapter of the Television Academy. The television markets that the Chicago/Midwest Chapter covers are: Chicago, IL; Peoria-Bloomington, IL; Rockford, IL; Green Bay-Appleton, WI; Madison, WI; Milwaukee, WI; Wausau-Rhinelander, WI; and South Bend-Elkhart, IN. Will attain senior level status, in a bachelor’s degree program, as of the fall term OR be enrolled in a graduate degree program in that term. Be able to demonstrate a course of study that supports the intention to pursue a career in the television industry. The 2nd set of scholarships is for current high school seniors preparing to attend post-secondary institutions and who are committed to careers in the television industry Applicants must: Have attained senior level status in high school. Be able to demonstrate a planned course of study in a college or university that supports the intention to pursue a career in the television industry. Be enrolled in a high school within the ADI (area of dominant influence) of the television markets within the Chicago/Midwest chapter jurisdiction OR have your primary residence (home address) within the ADI of the television markets within the Chicago/Midwest chapter jurisdiction OR be a relative of a member in good standing of the Chicago/Midwest Chapter of the Television Academy. Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of professional potential and commitment. Applications are reviewed by a prestigious group of television professionals. They are scored based on their essay responses, and their demonstrated commitment to the television industry (via internships, school projects, etc.). Finalists are personally interviewed. The Foundation advertises its scholarships through emails and flyers to the schools in their region.

Full-time undergraduate or graduate students attending 4-year HACU-member institutions with a declared major in Engineering, Business, Public Relations, Mass Media, Sports Marketing, Marketing, Marketing Management and Technology. Students must possess a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, and be attending school in the following states: FL, NC and GA. Please check the website for the complete list of HACU-member institutions.
