Journalism Scholarships

Recipients to be Journalism majors with financial need and promising grade point average.

More than $200,000 has been awarded to students of Italian heritage over the years by the JCCIA through the John Fischetti Scholarship, which is presented each year to two young journalism students at the Dante Award.

The Bertha and Byron L. Reppert Scholarship was established in 2001 in memory of their mother and to honor Byron L. Reppert’s then 80th Birthday by his four daughters and their extended families. The scholarship is to encourage and recognize two senior students (one Girl and one Boy) from the Mechanicsburg Area School Districtwho demonstrate good citizenship and actively exhibit an interest in political science, history, horticulture or journalism. This scholarship is an endowment fund of the Foundation for Enhancing Communities.Selection criteriaScholarship applications will be evaluated on the following criteria:1. Applicant must have an interest in political science or horticulture (i.e. participation in student council or local government, or in horticultural activities such as 4-H, local garden clubs, etc.)2. Applicant must be in the top one-third of their graduating class3. Applicant must be accepted to an accredited college or university4. Applicant must demonstrate good citizenship within the school and local community5. Applicant must complete an essay explaining how they meet the above mentioned criteria, one page, 12 pt font, double spaced6. Applicant with financial need is given consideration

Description:This scholarship is named in honor of Bernice Pi‘ilani Irwin who was a friend of Queen Lili‘u‘okalani. Bernice was the author of a collection of Hawaiian tales called "In Menehune Land." She also wrote a popular column for the Honolulu Advertiser and later for the Honolulu Times, which was edited by her husband Edwin Irwin. Her column was entitled "Kahuna Nui, the Old Sage of Kaka‘ako," and was a discourse on politics and civic affairs, written in pidgin. The Irwins set up this trust fund to students who, like Bernice, wish to have careers in journalism. Requirements: Major in Journalism or Communications. Be a college junior, senior or graduate student.

ELIGIBILITY: Pursuing a two- or four-year degree in animal nutrition, animal or food science, farm/ranch or business management, general agriculture, agricultural communications, journalism, extension, public relations, economics, international agriculture, finance, sales, marketing, engineering, mechanization, biochemistry, biological sciences, biotechnology, food packaging or technology or pulp and paper technology. Minimum 2.8 GPA on a 4.0 scale is required. Must be current FFA member. Applicant must exhibit strong leadership skills and have participated in community service. Some residency requirements may apply.AWARD: 80 scholarships at $1,000 each, non-renewable.

ELIGIBILITY: Pursuing a two- or four-year degree in agronomy, crop science, agricultural communications, education, journalism, extension, public relations, business management, economics, finance, sales, marketing, plant pathology/breeding/genetics, soil science or soil/water conservation. One scholarship will be awarded to resident of Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Two scholarships each will be awarded to residents of Iowa and Nebraska. Minimum 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale required.AWARD: 17 scholarships at $1,500 each, non-renewable

ELIGIBILITY: Pursuing a four-year degree in dairy science or agricultural journalism. Preference given to applicants with agricultural communications emphasis.AWARD: One scholarship at $1,000, non-renewable.

ELIGIBILITY: Pursuing a four-year degree in agriculture with a major in agronomy, crop science, animal nutrition, agricultural business/farm/livestock or ranch management, agricultural economics, agricultural journalism or international agriculture. Applicant or applicant’s parents/guardians must be members of an agricultural cooperative that is also a member of the Iowa Institute for Cooperatives.AWARD: Approximately two scholarship at $1,000 each. Not guaranteed.

ELIGIBILITY: Pursuing a two- or four-year degree in general agriculture; animal nutrition or science; farm and ranch management; poultry science; agricultural communications, journalism or public relations; management and finance; marketing and sales; or select area science and engineering. Must be a resident of a community in which a Tyson Foods processing facility is located. Scholarship recipients will be provided information regarding possible internship/part-time employment opportunities at Tyson Foods Inc.AWARD: 10 scholarships at $1,000 each, non-renewable.

In each ISLP delegation, scholars increase knowledge and preparation in a specific career field such as Anthropology & Archaeology, Communications & Journalism, Business, Diplomacy & International Relations, Engineering, Medicine and Nursing. Through a comparative curriculum, they gain a global understanding of how their career of interest is practiced in the host country and they are able to compare and contrast current methods and procedures in the United States.Golden Key and ISLP have partnered to offer four (4) $2,000(USD) scholarships exclusively for Golden Key members.
