History Scholarships

Here are some of the History scholarships on our site for which you may qualify.

Irmgard Farden Aluli Scholarship

 Minimum GPA 2.0  Undergraduate student  Enrolled at any University of Hawai`i system institution  Pursuing a degree in Hawaiian Studies, language, music and/or culture General criteria: • Must be a classified undergraduate student • Enrolled in a degree-seeking program, unless specifically noted • Enrolled in a two- or four-year, accredited* college institution in Hawai`i or the continental U.S. • Full-time status, unless specifically noted • Demonstrate interest in Hawaiian language, culture, history • Demonstrate a commitment to contribute to the greater community. *See website for accrediting bodies that are recognized by the Foundation. Applications are open to the general public. However, it is the policy of the Pauahi Foundation to give preference to applicants of Hawaiian ancestry to the extent permitted by law.

Johnny Pineapple Scholarship

 Minimum GPA 3.5  Major in Hawaiian language or Hawaiian studies  Submit two letters of recommendation from school, community organization or religious leaders who can comment on your overall character, achievement and contribution to serve the greater community  Submit essay describing involvement in community service including organizations, number of hours/length of volunteer service and how you intend to continue to benefit the Hawaiian community General criteria: • Must be a classified undergraduate student • Enrolled in a degree-seeking program, unless specifically noted • Enrolled in a two- or four-year, accredited* college institution in Hawai`i or the continental U.S. • Full-time status, unless specifically noted • Demonstrate interest in Hawaiian language, culture, history • Demonstrate a commitment to contribute to the greater community. *See website for accrediting bodies that are recognized by the Foundation. Joseph Näwahï Scholarship

GRADUATE STUDENTS ONLY  Minimum GPA 3.2  Graduate student at an accredited institution in the state of Hawai`i  Pursuing Hawaiian studies, Hawaiian politics, Law (specific to Hawaiian legal issues), or Communications/Journalism (specific to Hawaiian history, culture and politics)  Demonstrate financial need  Submit two letters of recommendation; one from a teacher or counselor and one from a community organization who can comment on your overall character, achievement and contribution to serve the greater community  Student Aid Report (SAR) from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Applications are open to the general public. However, it is the policy of the Pauahi Foundation to give preference to applicants of Hawaiian ancestry to the extent permitted by law.

King Olav V Norwegian-American Heritage Fund

Any American, 18 years of age or older, who has demonstrated a keen and sincere interest in Norwegian heritage and/or any Norwegian, 18 years of age or older, who has demonstrated an interest in American heritage, and who now desires to further the study of their heritages at a recognized educational institution (arts, crafts, literature, history, music, folklore, etc.) is eligible to apply for a scholarship. HOW ARE THE WINNERS SELECTED? Final selection of the scholarship winners will be made by a scholarship committee appointed by the President of the Sons of Norway Foundation. Notification of the award will be made within 10 weeks of deadline. Award decisions are based upon the following criteria. CRITERIA • Essay • Academic potential/grade transcripts (ACT/SAT) • Benefit to Sons of Norway and wider Norwegian/American community • Involvement in school and community activities • Two letters of recommendation • Financial need HOW DO I APPLY? Online at www.sofn.com/foundation/scholarships. While filling in the online form, the applicant will be asked to write an essay, setting forth in 500 words or less how this cross-cultural study will enhance your current field of study and/or career choices and how you will share this experience with Sons of Norway or wider audiences. Applicants should also state how their course of study will benefit their community and be in accord with the goals and objectives of the Sons of Norway Foundation: • Promote Improved International Relationships • Provide People-to-People Enrichment Programs • Promote Culture Exchange • Promote Humanitarian Causes Two letters of recommendation, describing the character and abilities of the applicant, must be emailed from the original source to scholarship@sofn.com by the application deadline. Finally, applicants must submit an “official copy” of their latest high school or college grade transcript. HOW MUCH IS THE AWARD? The Sons of Norway Foundation Scholarship Committee will determine each year the number of scholarships to be awarded. The range is typically $1,000-$1,500. A student may be awarded a maximum of two scholarships within a five-year period.
