Geology Scholarships

Purpose: To support remote sensing education and stimulate the development of applications of high-resolution digital satellite imagery for applied research by undergraduate or graduate students. Eligibility: Full time undergraduate or graduate students at an accredited college or university in the USA or Canada with image processing facilities appropriate for conducting the proposed work. Student member of ASPRS Award: A grant of satellite imagery data up to 500 square kilometers (potential value of up to $20,000), and a certificate inscribed with the recipient’s name. This award is presented by the ASPRS Foundation, with funding provided by The DigitalGlobe Foundation. DigitalGlobe will consider additional recipients per year based on the selection committee’s recommendation of an additional candidate’s merit. Award Parameters: Level of Imagery The 500 square kilometers will be limited IKONOS and GeoEye-1 imagery from the DigitalGlobe archive and can be the following product types: IKONOS (1M Panchromatic, 4M Multispectral, or 1M Pansharpenend Multispectral) Geo Geo Stereo (US only) GeoProfessional (Ortho, US only) GeoEye-1 (0.50-meter Panchromatic, 2-meter Multispectral, or 0.50-meter Pansharpenend Multispectral) Geo Geo Stereo (US only) GeoProfessional (Ortho, US only)

Purpose: The purpose of the award is to facilitate graduate-level studies and career goals adjudged to address new and innovative uses of signal processing, image processing techniques, and the application of photogrammetry to real-world techniques within the earth imaging industry. This award is presented by a grant from the ASPRS Foundation on behalf of corporate contributions to the Foundation by Z/I Imaging, a technology company that provides innovative solutions to the earth imaging industry. Eligibility: The award is restricted to members of ASPRS. It is intended for a student who is currently pursuing graduate-level studies or who plans to enroll for graduate studies in a recognized college or university in the United States or elsewhere. Award: The award consists of a one-year Scholarship in the amount of $2,000 and a certificate. Application: In addition to the application form and official transcripts, applicants must submit the following items: A 2-page statement detailing applicant’s educational and career plans for continuing studies in photogrammetric applications. Two completed letters of reference from faculty members who have knowledge of the applicant’s capabilities. Technical papers, research reports, or other pertinent items produced by the applicant and indicating capabilities in this field may be submitted with the application, but are not required. Award Selection: The Z/I Imaging Scholarship selection committee will evaluate each application and apply equal weight to each of the items listed above. The applicant who, in the opinion of the majority of the committee, has the highest overall ranking will be designated as the recipient.

The Mining and Metallurgical Society of America and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration Foundation offer one significant scholarship (MMSA/SMEF Scholarship) on an annual basis to an outstanding student whose study program encompasses any aspect of the extractive minerals industry. The scholarship will be awarded to a student whose study program is directed toward: a. Mining or geological engineering. b. Metallurgy, metallurgical engineering, or chemical engineering as related to metal recovery. c. Mining or mineral exploration geology. d. Environmental science or engineering as related to mining activities. Applicant Qualifications: MMSA/SMEF Scholarship applicants must meet the following criteria: 1. Have completed at least three years of undergraduate studies with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50. 2. Be an SME student member in good standing. 3. Attend a school that is ABET-accredited and/or has an SME student chapter. 4. Demonstrate a desire for and a probability of success in a career in the minerals industry. The Mining & Exploration (M&E) Division of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration annually awards scholarships to promising college students who have chosen as a career path the field of mining engineering. Applicants must be majoring in mining, geology or other field of specialization covered by the M&E Division’s technical unit committees (Environmental Control & Reclamation, Geochemistry, Geology, Geomechanics, Geophysics, Hydrology, Open Pit Mining, Operations Research, Solution Mining, Underground Mining and Underground Ventilation). The Eugene P. Pfleider Memorial Scholarship is administered by the Mining & Exploration Division and is awarded on an annual basis to students pursuing careers in mining engineering. SEG Scholarships are based on merit. To qualify, you must be: A student who is either: Attending high school and planning to enter college next fall; An undergraduate or graduate college student whose grades are above average. Intending to pursue a college curriculum directed toward a career in applied geophysics or a closely related field, such as geosciences, physics, geology, or earth and environmental sciences.

The Industrial Minerals & Aggregates Division (IM&AD) of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration annually awards one or more scholarships to promising college students who are pursuing degrees in geology, mining engineering, or mineral economics with special interests in an industrial minerals and aggregates-oriented program. The Gerald V. Henderson Memorial Scholarship (Henderson Scholarship) is open to undergraduate or graduate students. Applicant Qualifications: Henderson Scholarship applicants must meet the following criteria: 1. Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. 2. On an annual basis, the Women's Auxiliary to AIME (WAAIME) Scholarship fund provides scholarships to students pursuing degrees in the earth sciences as related to the minerals field. Fields recognized by WAAIME may include mining, geological sciences, metallurgy, petroleum, mineral sciences, materials science and engineering, mining economics, chemical engineering, and other related studies. The number and amount of scholarships awarded yearly shall be dictated by the funds available and by the financial needs of the applicants. Students are eligible to receive a maximum of two years of funding from WAAIME. The two years may be two undergraduate years, two graduate years, or one undergraduate year and one graduate year. Should extenuating circumstances occur, the student’s sponsoring section’s scholarship chair may recommend that the WAAIME Executive Committee approve a third year of funding for a student. Students wishing to receive funding must reapply annually. WAAIME Scholarship applicants must be attending accredited colleges or universities within the United States. The list of schools accredited by ABET, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, shall be used as a general guideline. There are no requirements regarding age, sex, citizenship, race or religion. Candidates may first apply in their second year of study. Preference will be given first to those needing aid for their final year and secondly to those requiring aid for their junior year. Undergraduate assistance will have priority over graduate work. All candidates must be full-time students and must maintain full-time status to receive WAAIME assistance. Objectives: The objectives of the AIST David H. Samson Canadian Scholarship are to reward and encourage Canadian students with scientific abilities to prepare for a career in engineering by providing financial support during attendance at a Canadian institution of higher education.Awards – One Scholarship, valued at US$2000 per year, is available each year for a maximum of four consecutive years or until graduation, whichever occurs first.Eligibility – Students eligible to compete for the Scholarship must, at the time of application, be the children (natural, adopted or ward) of a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant who is a member, in good standing, of the Association for Iron & Steel Technology. The student must also be accepted in an eligible full-time course at an accredited Canadian university or college studying engineering. If there is no engineering applicant, the award will be made to an eligible student studying chemistry, geology, mathematics or physics. Consideration will be given to extracurricular activities. The Scholarship may be awarded to a student entering a community college if there is no eligible student entering an accredited university.

he ASDSO Scholarship Program, established in 1992, awards annual undergraduate scholarships to U.S. citizens enrolled in accredited programs in engineering or related fields and planning careers related to the design, construction, or operation of dams. Scholarships have ranged from $5,000 to $10,000 in recent years. Successful recipients must be U.S. citizens and enrolled full-time at the senior level during the following year's academic term in an accredited civil engineering program, or in a related field as determined by ASDSO, and must demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in hydraulics, hydrology or geotechnical disciplines, or in another discipline related to the design, construction and operation of dams. Minimum Criteria Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 for the first three years of college and be recommended by their academic advisor. The American Society For Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing Scholarship is dedicated to encourage students to pursue education in the areas of geospatial science or technology associated with remote sensing, photogrammetry, surveying and mapping. The applicant is required to be enrolled or anticipating to enroll in a United States university or institution in the field of geospatical science, surveying and mapping, or a related field.
