Bernice Barabash Sports Scholarship (Hockey)

The Bernice Barabash Sports Scholarship provides two scholarships, one for a qualified student in grades 7, 8, or 9 and one for a qualified student in grades 10, 11 or 12. The award recognizes youth that participate in the sport while maintaining high academic standards in preparation for future educational enrichment.This scholarship is non-renewable.IMPORTANT: Do not complete the web-based application for the Bernice Barabash Sports Scholarship. Download the application and return by mail or in-person to the Jackson Community Foundation by set deadline.Eligibility Requirements:• Must be a student in grades 7, 8, 9 or 10, 11, 12• Must hold a minimum 3.0 grade point average• Must play hockey during the 2008-2009 school year.• Must live in Jackson County or surrounding communities that do not have ice arenas in their area.• Plan to attend an accredited college or university program, or vocational/technical instituteSelection Criteria:Selection of scholarship recipients will be made by a lottery draw of qualified applicantsScholarship Awards:Two $1,000 awards: one for a student in grade 7, 8 or 9 and one for a student in grade 10, 11 or 12. Prior recipients are not eligible to apply.

Martha & Oliver Hansen Memorial Scholarship

The Martha and Oliver Hansen Memorial Scholarship, established by Martha and Oliver's children Steve Hansen, Cindy Barrus and Marty Mercer, honors their parent's dedication to learning. "We have all greatly benefited from the support our parents gave us in pursuing educational opportunities, and would love to recognize our parents by opening opportunities for others to go to college as well." The purpose of the award is to recognize and encourage those who desire to enter the field of education with the intention of teaching in the classroom.This scholarship is renewable. Eligibility Requirements:• Holds a 2.5 or above grade point average• Majoring in Education with the intention of teaching in the classroom• Attends an accredited Michigan college or university• Be an incoming college junior or seniorScholarship Award:$1,000Scholarship Use:Tuition, books, fees, or other academic costs (including child care)

The Jackson Legacy Program

The Jackson Legacy Program provides college scholarships to Jackson, Michigan area students who are furthering education in Jackson County planning to attend Jackson Community College, Baker College of Jackson and Spring Arbor University. If community service and grade point average requirements are met, a scholarship for the second year will also be available. Please note that scholarship awards and their continuation are dependent on the sufficiency of available funding.
