Meteorological Sciences Scholarships

The purpose of our scholarships is to encourage young women interested in a career in the aerospace field to pursue higher education degrees in engineering or science or math. We have four merit-based awards of $2000 that will be given to rising juniors and seniors in college.

The Lone Star Emmy Educational Foundation proudly offers a scholarship program for college students pursuing meteorology and atmospheric science. Thanks to a generous donation from NBC DFW/KXAS-TV in Dallas/Fort Worth, the Lone Star Emmy Educational Foundation developed an annual college scholarship fund in the memory of Harold Taft, who served as Chief Meteorologist at KXAS-TV from 1949 until 1991. The Lone Star EMMY Foundation will award scholarships of up to $2,500 each to qualified students chosen by our Scholarship Committee. The Foundation will annually review the amount of the scholarships. To be considered for a scholarship, a student must meet the following eligibility requirements: Student must be in good standing (not on academic probation) with a minimum 2.5 GPA. Undergraduate students must have two (2) academic semesters remaining when the scholarship is awarded or be enrolled in graduate school. Student must submit at least two letters of recommendation from faculty, employers or internship supervisor. Student must submit a 3 page essay responding to these questions: Why did you select the television industry and weather in particular as your career choice? In what television or related activities have you participated? What is your first job preference after college and why? Student must be currently enrolled in an institution of higher learning in the State of Texas at a junior level or above. What is your ultimate career goal? To increase diversity and the number of students from underrepresented groups pursuing studies in meteorology, race and gender may be entered into the decision process. Applicants must be citizens of the United States of America either by birth or naturalization. Minority applicants who are Black (African American), Hispanic, Asian or Pacific Islander, American Indian, Aleutian (Alaskan) native or native Hawaiians must indicate such in a narrative statement how they meet these criteria.

The Washington State Chapter of WAI offers a $1,500 scholarship in memory of Janet Clark. She worked for the FAA as an airworthiness aviation safety inspector, maintenance division, and was a member of the Washington State Chapter. Washington State Chapter members are proud of Janet's contributions as a strong advocate for aviation education. The applicant shall be working toward a career in aviation, enrolled in an accredited aviation-related program, have experience volunteering at WAI events and/or aviation-related events in the previous year, and submit an essay that includes detailed explanations of the applicant's career path, goals, and volunteer experiences. The scholarship must be used within one year of receipt. It will be paid directly to an accredited program/institution and may be applied to tuition, books, specific training, or housing if the expense is arranged through an accredited program or institution. Aviation careers include, but are not limited to, air traffic controller, airport management, avionics technician, dispatcher, engineer, flight attendant, mechanic, meteorologist, navigator, and pilot. If the applicant has been working toward a career as a pilot, she/he must hold at least a private pilot certificate prior to submitting application. (Scholarship value $1,500) Submission Requirements: Applicants must be a member of Women in Aviation, International and may apply for no more than two scholarships. Internships are not included in the two per member scholarship limit. All application materials can be submitted in the same envelope. These requirements are the minimum for all scholarships unless otherwise indicated. Some scholarships may require additional information, please read the description thoroughly to make sure you meet all requirements. For each scholarship include three stapled (no folders) complete application sets (one original and two copies) of the following information: Official WAI application form Two one-page recommendation letters (originals - no photocopies) Typed, descriptive 500-word essay Professional résumé Copies of all aviation and medical certificates and the last three pages of your pilot logbook (if applicable)
