Scholarship Description
The Erling Jacobsen Scholarship was established in 2006 at the request of Peter Jacobsen from the proceeds of the Ouimet Fund’s Annual Banquet, which honored Peter. Erling Jacobsen had been an excellent athlete and played college football at the University of Oregon and two years of professional football in Los Angeles. He and his wife, Barbara, raised four children, and brought them into an active, busy life centered around the game of golf. At one point, the total handicap of all six Jacobsens was 26. Erling loved to teach others and was very knowledgeable about all aspects of the game. After he was diagnosedwith cancer in 1985, he traveled to many PGA TOUR events with his son, Peter, even playing in many programs. He passed on a great love of the game and humor to his children. To be eligible for a scholarship, applicants must have completed at least two years service to golf as caddies, helpers in the pro shop, or course superintendent operations at a club in Massachusetts. The awards are “need-based” and assist with tuition at accredited undergraduate institutions.
