Scholarship Description

ELIGIBLE MAJORSAll majors are eligible.ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTSYou and your parents (if you are a dependent student) must be Maryland residents.  You must enroll at a two-year or four-year Maryland college or university as a full-time degree seeking undergraduate student (12+ credits per semester) or full-time degree seeking graduate student (9+ credits per semester).  Audited courses cannot be used to reach the minimum credit hours required for full-time status.  You must enroll in courses of study, training, or other educational activities that are designed to prepare individuals for a career in public service.FINANCIAL NEEDYou must demonstrate financial need.  This is determined by filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submitting the Student Aid Report (SAR).AWARD AMOUNTThe annual award shall be equal to the cost of your tuition and mandatory fees.  The dollar amount of this award may not exceed $9,000.  The total amount of all State awards may not exceed your cost of attendance as determined by your school’s financial aid office or $19,000, whichever is less. Funds may not be available to award all eligible students.RENEWING AN AWARDYour award will be automatically renewed for up to three years if you continue to meet all the eligibility requirements and maintain the satisfactory academic progress standards of the institution.SERVICE OBLIGATIONYou must sign and return a promissory note agreeing to begin employment in the State within one year after completion of your degree program.  You are required to perform the service obligation one year for each year, or portion thereof, that you received the scholarship.  The service obligation begins after completion of the degree program, and cannot be fulfilled prior to completion. If you hold this scholarship with any other award requiring a service obligation, you must perform your service in consecutive years.Eligible employment is defined as employment in government at any level, public interest organizations, public schools, and nonprofit organizations under 501(C-3) or (4) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, such as those whose primary purposes are to help needy or disadvantaged persons, or disabled individuals, or to protect the environment.
