Deacon Palmer Scholarship

Scholarship Description

This award was established in 1998 and is named after the late father of Arnold Palmer. The Deacon Palmer Scholarship is for an Ouimet Scholar who intends to pursue a career in golf. Deacon Palmer spent his career as a course superintendent and golf professional at Latrobe Country Club in Western Pennsylvania. He died in 1976. Initial funding of the award came throughproceeds of the Ouimet Fund’s “Evening with Arnold Palmer” gala dinner in 1997 and another $100,000 was added to the endowment through proceeds of the 1999 “Boston Pops/Salute to the Ryder Cup and Arnold Palmer.”To be eligible for a scholarship, applicants must have completed at least two years service to golf as caddies, helpers in the pro shop, or course superintendent operations at a club in Massachusetts. The awards are “need-based” and assist with tuition at accredited undergraduate institutions.
