Scholarship Description
Art Scholarship Alert is a juried art exhibition and scholarship competition for grades 9 through 12, from over twenty Lansing area communities. This program is designed to give recognition and financial assistance for outstanding art students, encourage artistic growth and to provide an opportunity to participate as artists in a professional setting.Young artists learn commitment to a goal and gain self-confidence as they aspire to artistic excellence. Their successes establish them as significant role models for younger students. Students are required to submit a portfolio of five original works of art to be juried by a team of professional artists and educators.Acceptance to the exhibition is determined by the consistency of excellence in each portfolio (not each individual piece) and is judged exclusively within its own grade level. Since 1984 Art Scholarship Alert has awarded over $80,000 to young artists to help further their creative endeavors.In addition to the portfolio competition, students at the senior level may apply for the Sara Jane Venable Scholarship.To qualify for this $1000 award the student must demonstrate an exceptional record of achievement and involvement in the visual arts, prove a commitment to advanced study, write an essay for review, and present a portfolio of artwork including slides. A special panel of jurors selects one senior each year to receive this prestigious award.
