Scholarships for Women

Here are some of the scholarships for women on our site for which you may qualify.

John T. Dillon Alaska Research Award

The aim of the John T. Dillon Alaska Research Award is to support research that addresses earth science problems particular to Alaska, especially field-based studies dealing with the structural and tectonic development, and those that include some aspect of geochronology (either paleontologic or radiometric) to provide new age control for significant rock units in Alaska. Only members of the Society are eligible. Grants are awarded only to individuals. Institutions, societies, universities, and so on are not eligible for grants. Only under the most unusual circumstances will postdoctorate and faculty research be supported. Undergraduate students are not eligible. GSA strongly encourages women, minorities, and persons with disabilities to participate fully in this grants program. Candidates for advanced degrees must present their projects under their own names and support them adequately by informative documentation. Grants will not carry allowances to institutions to cover overhead costs. Applications are evaluated on the basis of the scientific merits of the problems, the capability of the investigator, and reasonableness of the budget. Applications must be submitted on the current form.

Robert K. Fahnestock Memorial Award

The Robert K. Fahnestock Memorial Award is made annually to the applicant with the best application in the field of sediment transport or related aspects of fluvial geomorphology. Only members of the Society are eligible. Grants are awarded only to individuals. Institutions, societies, universities, and so on are not eligible for grants. Only under the most unusual circumstances will postdoctorate and faculty research be supported. Undergraduate students are not eligible. Lipman Research Award

The Lipman Research Award is to promote and support graduate research in volcanology and petrology. Only members of the Society are eligible. Grants are awarded only to individuals. Bruce L. Biff Reed Award

The Bruce L. Biff Reed Award is for graduate students pursuing studies in the tectonic and magmatic evolution of Alaska and also can fund other geological research. Only members of the Society are eligible. Grants are awarded only to individuals. Institutions, societies, universities, and so on are not eligible for grants. Only under the most unusual circumstances will postdoctorate and faculty research be supported. Undergraduate students are not eligible. Harold T. Stearns Fellowship Award

The Harold T. Stearns Fellowship Award is awarded annually in support of research on one or more aspects of the geology of Pacific Islands and of the circum-Pacific region. Only members of the Society are eligible. Grants are awarded only to individuals. Institutions, societies, universities, and so on are not eligible for grants. Only under the most unusual circumstances will postdoctorate and faculty research be supported. Undergraduate students are not eligible. Dominican Women's Caucus Scholarship

The Dominican Women's Caucus is offering a scholarship in remembrance of Ilka Tanya Payan for young women of Dominican descent, who are accepted or are attending a university and majoring in Law or in the Arts.

Student Aid Award for Physically Disabled Students

The Student Aid Award is intended for young, physically disabled individuals in need of further education. Applicants should be between 15 and 40 years old at the time of application. Financial need and the capacity to profit from further education are the two crucial criteria by which each applicant is judged. There are seven regional recipients. From these, one first-place and one second-place winner is chosen.

Doris Mullen Scholarship

A $4,500 scholarship is awarded to a Whirly-Girl in good standing toward an advanced helicopter rating.

Whirly-Girls Helicopter Flight Training Schp

A $4,500 scholarship is available to assist a rated woman pilot in earning her helicopter add-on rating. Applications are evaluated for evidence of financial need and intent to work in the helicopter industry.

Boeing Scholarship

This scholarship is given to a Whirly-Girl in good standing to attend factory approved ground and flight training for the MD500 turbine helicopter.

Flight Safety Int'l Instrument Refresher Course

Awarded to a Whirly-Girl in good standing, who possesses a helicopter instrument rating.

Women's Sports Foundation Travel & Training Fund

Amateur female athlete with a regional and/or national ranking or successful competitive records who has the potential to achieve higher performance levels and rankings within their sport or age group. Athletes must be competing outside of their state in regional, national or international competitions. Assistance is available for coaching, specialized training and equipment and/or travel. College Student-Athlete Eligibility: It is likely that accepting this grant will affect your collegiate eligibility. If you plan to participate in intercollegiate sports at a Division I school, the NCAA advises you to consult with your college coach or compliance officer to determine whether funding through this program will affect your eligibility. The NCAA regulations are technical and need to be interpreted by the NCAA or the college to determine eligibility in your specific circumstances. If you have specific questions, call the NCAA Legislative Services. An individual can be awarded only one grant per calendar year. A maximum of three grants can be awarded to an individual in a lifetime. Individual applicants must be American citizens or legal residents to be eligible for funding. Must be eligible to compete on a US National Team based on citizenship.
