Scholarship Description

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) and NASCAR Wendell Scott, Sr. Scholars Program are proud to offer financial assistance to college freshman and sophomores who attend one of the 47 publicly-supported Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) within the TMCF member-school network. The NASCAR Scholarship is open only to college Freshman or Sophomore students with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Selected scholars will receive a one-year merit scholarship of $4,500 for the 2015-2016 academic school year, which will be used to cover the costs of tuition and fees, on-campus room and board and required textbooks purchased from member schools. Students must meet the following minimum criteria to apply for the award:

SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA

All students nominated for this program must meet the following minimum criteria to qualify for a scholarship:
Be enrolled as a full-time college freshman or sophomore student at one of TMCF’s 47 member-schools for the 2015-2016 academic year
Major in Business, Engineering, Public Relations, Mass Media, Technology, Sports Marketing or Marketing/Management
Current grade point average of 3.0
Demonstrate financial need
Have demonstrated leadership ability through a variety of measures

APPLICATION PROCESS

The scholarship application and selection process is competitive. To apply, students must complete the following:
Resume (include community service, leadership and employment/internship experience)
2015-2016 Student Aid Report (received from filing FAFSA)
Most recent transcript (applicants may upload a copy of either an unofficial or official transcript)
Recommendation Letter from current school faculty member (includes faculty signature)
Essay: In a minimum of 500 words, please address the following questions:
Wendell Scott Sr. was the first African-American driver and winner in NASCAR and broke many racial barriers. Is racism still a problem in this country today? If so, what steps can be taken to address the issue? If not, please explain your answer.
