Art Portfolio

Individual portfolio of eight works, including at least three drawings. Art portfolios submitted for national judging or from unsponsored regions must be submitted in the form of 35mm slides.

Open to graduating students who plan to attend college.  Be sure to check entry form for any regional requirements.

Use Portfolio Entry Form. Slides should be of the highest possible quality.

Photography Portfolio

Individual portfolio of eight works. Photography portfolios may be submitted in print, slide or transparency form.

Size Limitations For All Works:

Artwork must fit into a box with appropriate packing materials, including styrofoam peanuts, bubble-wrap and/or double boxing, whose dimensions do not exceed 130" in length and girth combined (length + 2x width + 2x depth). A good rule of thumb is to add 6" to each dimension (length + width + depth) when measuring the artwork and then use the formula above to determine length + girth. Maximum weight in all categories is 130 lbs.

Entry may consist of one or several poems. A group/collection of poems is submitted as one entry, provided that the total lines do not exceed length limitations.

20 30 Satire, parody, or humorous anecdote in any form

Science Fiction/Fantasy

Science Fiction explores the potential effects of real or imagined science/technology on society or individuals. Fantasy creates its own universe.

Writing Portfolio

General Portfolio - A collection of narratives, individual poems, and/or dramatic scripts demonstrating the breadth and diversity of the writer's talent.

Longer works-in-progress may be submitted.

Portfolios must include a table of contents (title, category, and indicate if work has been submitted previously) and a personal essay of reflection about the writing portfolio (not to exceed 500 words).

James B. Reston Portfolio - A collection of essays, nonfiction, and/or opinion pieces demonstrating the breadth of the writer's talent.

The Freedom Forum-NCAA Sports-Journalism Scholarship Program

Application Requirements/Description:

The Freedom Forum in cooperation with the NCAA is seeking scholarship applications from college juniors with career goals in sports journalism, majors in journalism or experience in campus sports journalism. Awards: Eight $3,000 scholarships will be awarded to applicants in their junior year to assist them in their senior year of study. The program is specifically designed to foster freedoms of speech and press while promoting quality sports journalism education at the collegiate level.

The eight one-year nonrenewable scholarships will be awarded to juniors who will be full-time seniors in the 2007-08 academic year.

Applications for these scholarships will be judged by a selection committee determined by The Freedom Forum and the NCAA. In addition to completing the application form, you must supply the following information:

1. Your official college transcript.

2. Three examples of sports journalism work. These should include examples such as newspaper articles, program copy, published photographs, editorials, television and/or radio scripts. (VHS tapes will be accepted.)

The 2007-08 Siemens Westinghouse Competition is open to all senior high school students who would like to submit an original science and math research project. You may enter as an individual (if you will be a senior in September), or as part of a team of two or three students (note: it is not necessary to have seniors on the team).

The Siemens Westinghouse Competition in Math, Science & Technology recognizes remarkable talent early on, fostering individual growth for high school students who are willing to challenge themselves through science research. Through this competition, students have an opportunity to achieve national recognition for science research projects that they complete in high school.

Students may submit research reports either individually or in teams of two or three members. Impartial panels of research scientists from leading universities and national laboratories judge the reports in the initial blind reading.

Students whose projects are selected for further competition, are invited to give an oral and poster presentation at one of the six regional events hosted by partner universities. At each of these regional competitions an individual and a team are selected as Regional Winners. These students receive scholarships and invitations to advance to the National Competition in Washington, D.C.

Note: Siemens scholarship may be used for any part of a student's post high school education including books, tuition, room and board, etc.

Essays based on studies conducted by a class, a summer institute, summer camp, pre-college student research program, or environmental program are eligible as long as the student conducted his or her own research and expanded the investigation to include his or her own topic question. The essay must demonstrate the student's independence and creativity.

Who is eligible to apply for a fellowship?

Applicants must be committed to teaching American history, American government, and/or social studies full time in grades 7-12.

What is a "qualifying master’s degree program"?

The university chosen for graduate study must offer courses, graduate seminars or opportunities for independent study in topics directly related to the framing and history of the U.S. Constitution. What are the selection criteria?

Applicants are evaluated on their demonstrated commitment to a career teaching American history, American government, or social studies at the secondary school level; demonstrated intent to pursue and complete a program of graduate study that emphasizes the Constitution and offers classroom instruction in that subject; demonstrated devotion to civic responsibility; demonstrated capacity for graduate study and performance as classroom teachers, and their proposed courses of graduate study. Applicants compete only against other applicants from the states of their legal residence.
