Civil Engineering Scholarships
Civil engineering is one of the most popular of the more than 40 varieties of engineering offered at the bachelor's level. In this field you learn about the science and math behind large-scale public and private construction. We're talking about bridges, dams, highways and water purification systems. Unlike many academic disciplines, in the field of civil engineering there is little program variation from college to college. There is really only one way to safely build a dam and in this program, you'll learn it. Core courses include dynamics, surveying, material strength, soil mechanics, construction materials, water resources and fluid mechanics.
Many programs allow you to choose a civil engineering concentration so that your education can line up with your vocational goals. Examples of these concentrations include water resources, transportation engineering, construction or hydrosystems. Your coursework will consist of both lecture and lab courses.
This is an intellectually demanding major that will probably take over your life for the duration of your college studies. It will probably take up all the time you have and some of the time that you don't. In other words, you will not have the free time that your friends in the humanities have. But with great rewards must come some sacrifice.
The career outlook for civil engineers is slightly better than average. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, civil engineers can expect a 19% increase in employment opportunities over the coming decade. Maintaining our nations infrastructure will contribute to much of this growth. To advance to senior leadership positions you may need a graduate degree in either engineering or business.

ASDO Senior Undergraduate Scholarship
Scholarships of up to $10,000 will be awarded for the 2014/2015 school year. Successful recipients must be U.S. citizens and enrolled full-time at the senior level in an accredited civil engineering program, or in a related field as determined by ASDSO, and must demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in hydraulics, hydrology or geotechnical disciplines, or in another discipline related to the design, construction and operation of dams.
Minimum Criteria - Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 for the first three years of college and be recommended by their academic advisor.
Basis for Award - The basis for selection will generally follow these guidelines:

Betty Shanahan Scholarship
The SWE Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to women admitted to accredited baccalaureate or graduate programs, in preparation for careers in engineering, engineering technology and computer science.
A one-time only graduate student scholarship to recognize SWE's Executive Director & CEO Betty Shanahan's outstanding accomplishment over 10 year's of service. SWE membership required. Amount: TBD

You must be planning to attend full time (exceptions are made for reentry and non-traditional applicants).

Anne Maureen Whitney Barrow Memorial Scholarship
Awarded once per renewal cycle. 1 @ $7,000 Renewable 5 yr. max.
Open to Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior, Senior students. All Engineering majors.

Ada I. Pressman Memorial Scholarship
SWE Scholarships support women pursuing ABET-accredited baccalaureate or graduate programs in preparation for careers in engineering, engineering technology and computer science in the United States and Mexico.
US citizenship required. Availability dependent upon renewals. Open to Sophomore, Junior, Senior and Graduate students.

Western Union Foundation Global Scholarship Program
The Western Union Foundation Global Scholarship Program (WU Scholars) is a program designed to support young people and their efforts to pursue a post-secondary education.
Selected scholarship recipients will receive USD $2,500 each to contribute toward tuition or school fees at an accredited post-secondary institution and will be selected based on criteria relating to the program's three pillars: Perseverance, Aspiration, and Community.
To be eligible, students must be seeking an undergraduate degree in one of the following categories: science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and business/entrepreneurship.
The application, which requires a letter of recommendation and an academic transcript, opens Wednesday March 8th. The application deadline is Wednesday, April 12 at noon Eastern Standard Time.

Arsham Amirikian Engineering Scholarship
The purpose for this scholarship is to provide financial assistance to an engineering student pursuing a career in the application of the art of welding in civil and structural engineering.
Eligibility
The Arsham Amirikian Welding Scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate student pursuing a minimum four-year bachelors degree in civil engineering or welding related degree at an accredited university. All applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements.
1. Applicant must be a minimum of eighteen years of age.
2. Applicant must have a minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
3. Applicant must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average.
4. Proof of financial need is required to qualify.
5. Applicant must be a citizen of the United States and plan to attend an accredited engineering school located within the United States
6. Applicant must submit all required application information.
7. Maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average throughout the academic year to apply for continued assistance in successive years. The maximum time allowed for financial aid under this grant is four years.
The award will be presented to individuals nationwide. Applicant does not have to be a member of the American Welding Society.
The AWS Foundation does not discriminate by age, race, color, national origin, disability, creed, or gender.
Selection
The recipient will be chosen by a Selection Committee comprised of five (5) members, selected by the Education Scholarship Committee. The Selection Committee will determine award recipient in February of each year. Recipient will be announced at the National Awards Luncheon.
Awards
One $2,500 award will be given annually. No recipient shall receive more than one AWS National Scholarship award per year.
No awards will be paid to the recipient. All awards are for tuition and books only, and will be paid directly to the academic institution by the AWS Foundation.
Office of Naval Research Postdoctoral Fellowship Program
Citizenship: Participants selected for support under the ONR Postdoctoral Fellowship Program must be citizens of the United States. Security Clearance: Participants must be eligible for a Department of Defense security clearance of Secret. In most cases, participants will be permitted to do research pending completion of the security clearance. All appointments are contingent upon Fellows obtaining the appropriate level of security clearance. Education and Experience: Before appointment, participants must present evidence of having received the Ph.D., Sc.D., or other earned doctoral degree recognized in U.S. academic circles as equivalent to the Ph.D. within seven years of the date of application, or must present acceptable evidence of having completed all formal academic requirements for one of these degrees. Prior Fellowships: A person who has received a prior postdoctoral fellowship at a navy laboratory under any program may not be eligible to participate in the ONR Postdoctoral Program at the same laboratory. McNamee Porter & Seeley/University of Michigan Scholarship
Preference is given to a student in sanitary engineering, although any civil engineering student may qualify. MSPE will select the recipient with advice from the Chair of the Civil Engineering Department at the University. Applicants must: Be a member of an MSPE Student Chapter, if available on campus, or a State member-at-large. Be a U.S. Citizen and a resident of Michigan. Be in an ABET accredited engineering program at a Michigan college or university. Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Submit recommendations from at least two professors in the applicant's field of engineering study or appropriate math/science professor. Must specify academic and personal traits and extracurricular activities. Absence of these recommendations will disqualify the applicant. Demonstrate leadership and an interest in the engineering profession through involvement in school and/or outside activities.
MSPE Abrams Grant
This grant is available to a top ranking student interested in pursuing a career in civil or surveying engineering and enrolled in an ABET accredited program at a Michigan college or university. Applicants must: Be a member of an MSPE Student Chapter, if available on campus, or a State member-at-large. Be a U.S. Citizen and a resident of Michigan. Be in an ABET accredited engineering program at a Michigan college or university. Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Submit recommendations from at least two professors in the applicant's field of engineering study or appropriate math/science professor. Must specify academic and personal traits and extracurricular activities. Absence of these recommendations will disqualify the applicant. Demonstrate leadership and an interest in the engineering profession through involvement in school and/or outside activities.
John T. Dillon Alaska Research Award
The aim of the John T. Dillon Alaska Research Award is to support research that addresses earth science problems particular to Alaska, especially field-based studies dealing with the structural and tectonic development, and those that include some aspect of geochronology (either paleontologic or radiometric) to provide new age control for significant rock units in Alaska. Only members of the Society are eligible. Grants are awarded only to individuals. Institutions, societies, universities, and so on are not eligible for grants. Only under the most unusual circumstances will postdoctorate and faculty research be supported. Undergraduate students are not eligible. GSA strongly encourages women, minorities, and persons with disabilities to participate fully in this grants program. Candidates for advanced degrees must present their projects under their own names and support them adequately by informative documentation. Grants will not carry allowances to institutions to cover overhead costs. Applications are evaluated on the basis of the scientific merits of the problems, the capability of the investigator, and reasonableness of the budget. Applications must be submitted on the current form.
Bechtel Undergraduate Fellowship Award
The Bechtel Undergraduate Fellowship Award is financial support program that encourages and recognizes high academic achievement of students interested in pursuing a corporate career in a construction-related engineering discipline. The award is accompanied by internship and mentoring opportunities. Two students are selected in their junior year. The recipients are awarded $2,500 each for up to two years. The minimum grade point average required is 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
Undergraduate Scholarships
Applicant must be a college freshman, a first or second-year student at a two-year school who is planning to transfer to a four-year program for the fall term, or a college sophomore, junior, or beginning senior in a five-year program. Junior and senior level applicants must have one full academic year of coursework at the beginning of the fall term. Applicant must desire a career in construction. Applicant must pursue a BS degree in construction or construction/civil engineering. A dual degree with construction or construction/civil engineering as one part is acceptable. Student must be a U.S. citizen or documented permanent resident of the United States (i.e. must possess a green card).
