Geology Scholarships

Here are some of the Geology scholarships on our site for which you may qualify.

Jane C. Waldbaum Archaeological Field School Scholarship

Established in honor of AIA Honorary President Jane Waldbaum, this scholarship is intended to help students who are planning to participate in archaeological field work for the first time. Students majoring in archaeology or related disciplines are especially encouraged to apply. The Scholarship Fund provides $1000 each to help pay expenses associated with participation in an archaeological field work project (minimum stay one month/4 weeks). The scholarship is open to students who have begun their junior year of undergraduate studies at the time of application and have not yet completed their first year of graduate school at a college or university in the United States or Canada. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and must not have previously participated in archaeological field work of any kind. The committee will consider both academic achievement and financial need in its deliberations. AIA scholarships are open to students from all backgrounds. Minority and disadvantaged students are encouraged to apply. For more information, please contact Deanna Baker, Membership and Societies Administrator. The Waldbaum Scholarship will be awarded to junior and senior undergraduates and first-year graduate students only. All applicants must complete the following: Complete online application form Provide names and emails of two references. Your references will receive an email with instructions for submitting their recommendations online. You are responsible for ensuring that both referees have submitted their letters of recommendation online by the application deadline. Send transcripts: Transcripts must be official and include at least two full years of completed college-level work (4 semesters or 6 quarters), not counting AP credits. If you are a transfer student and have attended your current school for less than two years, please submit transcripts from your previous school(s) in order to provide a record of at least two full years of completed college-level work (4 semesters/6 quarters), not counting AP credits. Post-Baccalaureate and first year graduate students must submit both undergraduate and post-graduate transcripts.

The DigitalGlobe Foundation Award for the Application of High-Resolution Digital Satellite Imagery

Purpose: To support remote sensing education and stimulate the development of applications of high-resolution digital satellite imagery for applied research by undergraduate or graduate students. Eligibility: Full time undergraduate or graduate students at an accredited college or university in the USA or Canada with image processing facilities appropriate for conducting the proposed work. Student member of ASPRS Award: A grant of satellite imagery data up to 500 square kilometers (potential value of up to $20,000), and a certificate inscribed with the recipient’s name. This award is presented by the ASPRS Foundation, with funding provided by The DigitalGlobe Foundation. DigitalGlobe will consider additional recipients per year based on the selection committee’s recommendation of an additional candidate’s merit. Award Parameters: Level of Imagery The 500 square kilometers will be limited IKONOS and GeoEye-1 imagery from the DigitalGlobe archive and can be the following product types: IKONOS (1M Panchromatic, 4M Multispectral, or 1M Pansharpenend Multispectral) Geo Geo Stereo (US only) GeoProfessional (Ortho, US only) GeoEye-1 (0.50-meter Panchromatic, 2-meter Multispectral, or 0.50-meter Pansharpenend Multispectral) Geo Geo Stereo (US only) GeoProfessional (Ortho, US only)

Z/I Imaging Scholarship

Purpose: The purpose of the award is to facilitate graduate-level studies and career goals adjudged to address new and innovative uses of signal processing, image processing techniques, and the application of photogrammetry to real-world techniques within the earth imaging industry. This award is presented by a grant from the ASPRS Foundation on behalf of corporate contributions to the Foundation by Z/I Imaging, a technology company that provides innovative solutions to the earth imaging industry. Eligibility: The award is restricted to members of ASPRS. It is intended for a student who is currently pursuing graduate-level studies or who plans to enroll for graduate studies in a recognized college or university in the United States or elsewhere. Award: The award consists of a one-year Scholarship in the amount of $2,000 and a certificate. Application: In addition to the application form and official transcripts, applicants must submit the following items: A 2-page statement detailing applicant’s educational and career plans for continuing studies in photogrammetric applications. Two completed letters of reference from faculty members who have knowledge of the applicant’s capabilities. Technical papers, research reports, or other pertinent items produced by the applicant and indicating capabilities in this field may be submitted with the application, but are not required. Award Selection: The Z/I Imaging Scholarship selection committee will evaluate each application and apply equal weight to each of the items listed above. The applicant who, in the opinion of the majority of the committee, has the highest overall ranking will be designated as the recipient.

MMSA/SMEF Presidential Scholarship

The Mining and Metallurgical Society of America and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration Foundation offer one significant scholarship (MMSA/SMEF Scholarship) on an annual basis to an outstanding student whose study program encompasses any aspect of the extractive minerals industry. The scholarship will be awarded to a student whose study program is directed toward: a. Mining or geological engineering. b. Metallurgy, metallurgical engineering, or chemical engineering as related to metal recovery. c. Mining or mineral exploration geology. d. Environmental science or engineering as related to mining activities. Applicant Qualifications: MMSA/SMEF Scholarship applicants must meet the following criteria: 1. Have completed at least three years of undergraduate studies with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50. 2. Be an SME student member in good standing. 3. Attend a school that is ABET-accredited and/or has an SME student chapter. 4. Demonstrate a desire for and a probability of success in a career in the minerals industry. Application Requirements: MMSA/SMEF Scholarship applications must be submitted online through SME’s scholarship application portal (https://app.wizehive.com/appform/login/smeapp). Short statement (one page) describing applicant’s interest in/passion for a career in the extractive minerals industry. 3. Mining & Exploration Division Scholarship and Eugene P. Pfleider Scholarship

The Mining & Exploration (M&E) Division of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration annually awards scholarships to promising college students who have chosen as a career path the field of mining engineering. Applicants must be majoring in mining, geology or other field of specialization covered by the M&E Division’s technical unit committees (Environmental Control & Reclamation, Geochemistry, Geology, Geomechanics, Geophysics, Hydrology, Open Pit Mining, Operations Research, Solution Mining, Underground Mining and Underground Ventilation). The Eugene P. Pfleider Memorial Scholarship is administered by the Mining & Exploration Division and is awarded on an annual basis to students pursuing careers in mining engineering. Eligible students may submit one application in consideration for both of these scholarships. See the scholarship guidelines for more information. Applicant Qualifications: M&E/Pfleider Scholarship applicants must meet the following criteria: 1. Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50. 2. Be an SME student member in good standing. 3. Attend a school that is ABET accredited and/or has an SME student chapter. 4. Demonstrate a desire for and a probability of success in a career in the mining/minerals industry. SEG/John R. Butler Endowed Scholarship

SEG Scholarships are based on merit. To qualify, you must be: A student who is either: Attending high school and planning to enter college next fall; An undergraduate or graduate college student whose grades are above average. Intending to pursue a college curriculum directed toward a career in applied geophysics or a closely related field, such as geosciences, physics, geology, or earth and environmental sciences.

Gerald V. Henderson Memorial Scholarship (Industrial Minerals & Aggregates Division)

The Industrial Minerals & Aggregates Division (IM&AD) of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration annually awards one or more scholarships to promising college students who are pursuing degrees in geology, mining engineering, or mineral economics with special interests in an industrial minerals and aggregates-oriented program. The Gerald V. Henderson Memorial Scholarship (Henderson Scholarship) is open to undergraduate or graduate students. Applicant Qualifications: Henderson Scholarship applicants must meet the following criteria: 1. Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. 2. Be an SME student member in good standing. 3. Attend a school that is ABET-accredited and/or has an SME Student Chapter. 4. Demonstrate a desire for and a probability of success in a career in industrial minerals and/or aggregates industries. WAAIME Scholarship

On an annual basis, the Women's Auxiliary to AIME (WAAIME) Scholarship fund provides scholarships to students pursuing degrees in the earth sciences as related to the minerals field. Fields recognized by WAAIME may include mining, geological sciences, metallurgy, petroleum, mineral sciences, materials science and engineering, mining economics, chemical engineering, and other related studies. The number and amount of scholarships awarded yearly shall be dictated by the funds available and by the financial needs of the applicants. Students are eligible to receive a maximum of two years of funding from WAAIME. The two years may be two undergraduate years, two graduate years, or one undergraduate year and one graduate year. Should extenuating circumstances occur, the student’s sponsoring section’s scholarship chair may recommend that the WAAIME Executive Committee approve a third year of funding for a student. Students wishing to receive funding must reapply annually. WAAIME Scholarship applicants must be attending accredited colleges or universities within the United States. The list of schools accredited by ABET, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, shall be used as a general guideline. There are no requirements regarding age, sex, citizenship, race or religion. Candidates may first apply in their second year of study. Preference will be given first to those needing aid for their final year and secondly to those requiring aid for their junior year. Undergraduate assistance will have priority over graduate work. All candidates must be full-time students and must maintain full-time status to receive WAAIME assistance. AIST David H. Samson Canadian Scholarship

Objectives: The objectives of the AIST David H. Samson Canadian Scholarship are to reward and encourage Canadian students with scientific abilities to prepare for a career in engineering by providing financial support during attendance at a Canadian institution of higher education.Awards – One Scholarship, valued at US$2000 per year, is available each year for a maximum of four consecutive years or until graduation, whichever occurs first.Eligibility – Students eligible to compete for the Scholarship must, at the time of application, be the children (natural, adopted or ward) of a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant who is a member, in good standing, of the Association for Iron & Steel Technology. The student must also be accepted in an eligible full-time course at an accredited Canadian university or college studying engineering. If there is no engineering applicant, the award will be made to an eligible student studying chemistry, geology, mathematics or physics. Consideration will be given to extracurricular activities. The Scholarship may be awarded to a student entering a community college if there is no eligible student entering an accredited university.

CDM Scholarship/Internship

Scholarship Value: $6,000 Classifications: Open Minimum GPA: 3.0 Eligible Majors: Engineering, Science Eligible Schools: UNCF Member Colleges and Universities (please check the website for the complete list) Eligible Locations: Open Scholarship Detail: CDM and its subsidiaries, CDM Federal Programs Corporation and CDM Constructors, Inc. in association with the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) have established a scholarship/internship program for six students who have a 3.0 grade point average or above and who are majoring in a variety or engineering, science or construction disciplines, such as chemical, civil, electrical, environmental, geotechnical, geology/hydrogeology, geography, GIS, mechanical, mining and structural or will be pursuing a masters degree in one of the aforementioned disciplines. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Majors Scholarships

Eligibility Criteria:•Must be of Hispanic background•Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident residing in the United States or Puerto Rico•Must be studying at an accredited university in the U.S. or Puerto Rico for the upcoming academic year•Must be (or plan to be) enrolled full-time as an undergraduate or graduate student for the upcoming academic year•Must have earned and maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average of no less than 3.0 on a 4.0 scale•Must demonstrate financial need•Must be studying a major that falls under the STEM Majors Application

The Graduate Fellowship Award

Eligible applicants for Hertz Fellowships must be students of the applied physical, biological and engineering sciences who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States of America, and who are willing to morally commit to make their skills available to the United States in time of national emergency (see our Moral Commitment section).College seniors wishing to pursue the Ph.D. degree in any of the fields of particular interest to the Foundation, as well as graduate students already in the process of doing so, may apply.We screen Fellowship applicants for qualities the Foundation believes are essential ingredients of future professional accomplishment and/or reasonably reliable leading indicators of future professional success. These include:• Exceptional Intelligence and Creativitywith particular emphasis on those aspects pertinent to technical endeavors• Excellent Technical Educationevidenced not only by transcripts and reference reports from senior technical professionals, but also by the results of a personal, technical interview• Orientation and Commitment to the applications of the physical sciences as is typical of most applicants• Extraordinary Accomplishment in technical or related professional studies which may offset slightly lower academic records, or add luster to outstanding ones• Features of Temperament and Character conducive to high attainment as a technical professional the assessment of which is difficult, albeit important to the Foundation• Appropriate moral and ethical values of considerable interest to the Foundation in the furthering of our basic goals• Leverage what difference the award of the Hertz Fellowship is likely to make in the kind, quality, and/or personal creativity of the student's graduate researchWe do not support students pursuing advanced professional degrees other than the Ph.D., such as enrollees in M.D., LLD or MBA programs, although we will support the Ph.D. portion of a joint M.D./Ph.D. study program.
