Foreign Cultures Scholarships

Here are some of the Foreign Cultures scholarships on our site for which you may qualify.

The George and Carol Olmsted Foundation Scholarship

Giving on a national basis. No grants to individuals (except for Olmsted Scholars).

Airman Education and Commissioning Program

To allow selected enlisted Air Force personnel to earn a bachelor's degree in approved majors by providing financial assistance for full-time college study. Amount Awarded: $15000 Number Awarded: 35 each year. Duration: Until completion of a bachelor's degree, or up to 3 years (whichever is sooner). Deadline: Applications must be submitted to the base education service officer, who must forward them by the middle of January of each year. Eligibility: Eligible to participate in this program are enlisted members of the Air Force who have been accepted at a university or college (or approved cross-town institution) that is associated with AFROTC and that offers an approved major. The majors currently supported are computer engineering, electrical engineering, meteorology, nursing, foreign languages, and foreign area studies. Applicants must have completed 1 year of college study with a GPA of at least 3.0 and must be medically qualified. They must be younger than 30 years of age or otherwise able to be commissioned before they become 35 years of age. Additional Information: Upon completing their degree, selectees attend officer training school and are then commissioned to serve in the Air Force in their area of specialization. Further information is available from base education service officers or an Air Force ROTC unit.

CBA Archaeology Research Stipends

The Catholic Biblical Association will award three $3,000 stipends for archaeological research, renewable for a second season. The conditions for application are as follows: Applicants must be active or associate members of the CBA, and may be either full-time students working toward the doctorate (or S.S.L.) in biblical studies or related areas or have received the doctorate (or S.S.L.) in these areas. They must have been accepted, at least provisionally, for a specific, high quality dig and be without means to finance their participation. They must submit a description of the area of inquiry they intend to pursue in conjunction with the dig or at least a description of what they expect to learn. They must submit names of two professors who will write in support of their application. Those who receive awards will be expected to report to the Chair of the Archaeology Committee on their participation after their field experience. Materials submitted will be evaluated by the CBA Archaeology Committee (James W. Flanagan, Chair, William J. Fulco, Steven L. McKenzie, Paula M. McNutt, and Richard J. Sklba).

Institute for Humane Studies (HIS)-Humane Studies Fellowship

Award Amount: Up to $12,000 Requirements: Available for undergraduate or graduate study in the United States or abroad. Open to students interested in the classical liberal tradition.

Dr. George Papanicolaou Hellenic Heritage Graduate Research Grant

The purpose of the grant is to encourage Hellenic studies from the classic period through the eighteenth century. This grant is currently projected to be a minimum of one thousand dollars ($1,000). Candidates must meet all of the following criteria: • Candidates must be of Hellenic ancestry; • Candidates must be affiliated with an accredited university in the United States; • Candidates must be graduate students or Post doctoral fellows; • Candidates must be engaged in research directly related to Hellenic Studies, including, but not limited to: archaeology, history, arts and culture (theater arts, language, anthropology, etc.)Note: This grant is not applicable to either tuition or living expenses.

Frank Sugeno Research Award

The Episcopal Womens History Project encourages research and publication about the lives and work of women throughout the history of the Episcopal Church, including the period of the colonial Anglican Church. EWHP triennial gives the Frank Sugeno Research Award in the amount of $1000. Grants may be used for travel, the acquisition of research materials, or other research expenses. Proposals may focus on an individual Episcopal woman or on womens organizations, from the colonial period to the present. Projects involving the overseas activities of Episcopal women will also be considered. Previous grants have been awarded for a variety of projects, including the completion of a biography of the Rev. Gladys Lucile Hall, collection of primary texts for a documentary history of Anglican and Episcopal women in America, and identifying and researching pre-1950 murals created by Episcopal women. Fritz Halbers Fellowship - Leo Baeck Institute

Criteria: * For students enrolled in a Ph.D. program at an accredited institution of higher education and whose research projects are connected with the culture and history of German-speaking Jewry. The fellowships consist of an award, not exceeding $3000, to be determined according to the requirements of the project. The fellowship should be used by the end of the year in which it was granted. Support for travel or family members is not available. The fellowships will be announced in January. Junior Research Fellowships

Founded to assist scholars in their study of all aspects of Indian history, culture and contemporary life, the Institute brings about 35 scholars to India every year. These are both American citizens as well as non-American citizens resident in the United States. Of the latter group, many are Indian graduate students studying for Ph.D. degrees at American universities. Many of them return to India, where they assume faculty positions at Indian institutions. In turn, many Indian scholars are invited by member institutions of the American Institute of Indian Studies to lecture or participate in conferences. The Institute then facilitates their travel arrangements and can use its network of scholars across the United States to organize programs of lectures. Available to doctoral candidates at U.S. universities in all fields of study.

Senior Research Fellowships

Founded to assist scholars in their study of all aspects of Indian history, culture and contemporary life, the Institute brings about 35 scholars to India every year. These are both American citizens as well as non-American citizens resident in the United States. Of the latter group, many are Indian graduate students studying for Ph.D. degrees at American universities. Many of them return to India, where they assume faculty positions at Indian institutions. In turn, many Indian scholars are invited by member institutions of the American Institute of Indian Studies to lecture or participate in conferences. The Institute then facilitates their travel arrangements and can use its network of scholars across the United States to organize programs of lectures. Available to scholars who hold the Ph.D. or its equivalent. Non-U.S. citizens are welcome to apply if they are teaching full-time at U.S. colleges and universities.

Senior Scholarly/Professional Development Fellowships

Founded to assist scholars in their study of all aspects of Indian history, culture and contemporary life, the Institute brings about 35 scholars to India every year. These are both American citizens as well as non-American citizens resident in the United States. Of the latter group, many are Indian graduate students studying for Ph.D. degrees at American universities. Many of them return to India, where they assume faculty positions at Indian institutions. In turn, many Indian scholars are invited by member institutions of the American Institute of Indian Studies to lecture or participate in conferences. The Institute then facilitates their travel arrangements and can use its network of scholars across the United States to organize programs of lectures. Available to established scholars who have not previously specialized in Indian studies and to established professionals who have not previously worked or studied in India.

Senior Performing and Creative Arts Fellowships

Founded to assist scholars in their study of all aspects of Indian history, culture and contemporary life, the Institute brings about 35 scholars to India every year. These are both American citizens as well as non-American citizens resident in the United States. Of the latter group, many are Indian graduate students studying for Ph.D. degrees at American universities. Many of them return to India, where they assume faculty positions at Indian institutions. In turn, many Indian scholars are invited by member institutions of the American Institute of Indian Studies to lecture or participate in conferences. The Institute then facilitates their travel arrangements and can use its network of scholars across the United States to organize programs of lectures. Available to accomplished practitioners of the performing arts of India and creative artists who demonstrate that study in India would enhance their skills, develop their capabilities to teach or perform in the U.S., enhance American involvement with India

Maurice and Marilyn Cohen Fund for Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships in Jewish Studies

Criteria: * Student must be a U.S. citizen or permanent Resident. * Student must have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. degree, except the dissertation itself. * Student must have proficiency in a Jewish language adequate for pursuing an academic career in their chosen field. The amount of the grants is typically between $8,000 - 10,000. Fellowships are granted for one academic year and are normally given for the final stages of completing the dissertation.
