Biomedical Scholarships

The James M. & Erma T. Freemont Foundation will award $10,000 in scholarships for the 2015-2016 academic school year. Scholarships will be awarded to graduating high school seniors, undergraduates and students in graduate school. The Foundation is funding scholarships for students in the following categories: High School Seniors College Undergraduates Graduate Students The James M. & Erma T. Freemont Foundation will award $10,000 in scholarships for the academic school year. Scholarships will be awarded to graduating high school seniors, undergraduates and students in graduate school. Criteria/General Guidelines High School Seniors Current high school seniors must attend school in the United States. Applicant must be anticipating completion of high school in the spring. Applicants must plan to matriculate at accredited HBCU for the academic year (enrollment must begin in the Fall) with the intention of maintaining full-time status for the entire year. Current minimum grade point average of 3.00 on a 4.00 grade scale (excluding home school studies), and minimum SAT score of 1800 (combined math essay and verbal score) or ACT score of 28. Applicants must apply to and be accepted into an HBCU by July 1st. If you do not yet know which school you will attend, put your first choice. If you are awarded a scholarship you will need to submit proof of acceptance If you are an incoming student who has yet to enroll, you must submit proof of acceptance from schools of choice. Applicants must have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service activities. Undergraduate Students Applicants must attend (or planning to attend) an accredited HBCU for the Fall 2015/Spring 2016 academic year (enrollment must begin in the Fall) with the intention of maintaining full-time status for the entire year. Applicants must be pursuing an undergraduate degree in the sciences with the intention of pursuing that discipline as a career. Current minimum grade point average of 3.00 on a 4.00 grade scale Applicants must have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service activities. Graduate Students Graduate students must be enrolled in or must apply to and be accepted into a graduate school by July 1st. Applicants must be pursuing a graduate degree in the health and medical sciences with the intention of pursuing that discipline as a career. Applicants must be accepted or enrolled in an accredited graduate degree program in the United States for the Fall 2015/Spring 2016 academic year (enrollment must begin in the Fall). Current minimum grade point average of 3.00 on a 4.00 grade scale Applicants must have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service activities.

* The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation was created to ensure that the United States would maintain its leadership in science and technology in the future by supporting promising students in science and engineering. * Scholarship candidates must be nominated by faculty members. Students may not apply directly for the scholarship. * Scholarship nominees must be U.S. citizens. * Scholarship nominees must be engineering or natural or applied science (e.g. astronomy, biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, computer science) or mathematics students with intentions to pursue research or advance their field upon completion of their final degrees. Students intending to pursue a practice in professional medicine are not eligible for the scholarship. However, those intending to perform biomedical research are eligible. * At the time of nomination, scholarship candidates must be at least second year (sophomore) college students, have excellent grades, and have participated in lab and research work in their field. With this background, the student is fairly well committed to continuing on this course. * The Astronaut Scholarship is awarded only to students during their junior or senior year, or to Masters students. In some cases students may carry their awards to a second year. * Scholarship nominees are those students who have shown initiative, creativity, and excellence in their chosen field. The university committee selects their best two candidates and submits these nominees to the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation Scholarship Committee. * The ASF Scholarship Committee selects one recipient from each school and presents the candidates to the ASF Board of Directors for approval. If both nominees from a school are deemed unqualified, the scholarship will not be awarded to the school.

The Lindberg Research Fellowship Endowment, established in 2003, will provide a $10,000 grant, awarded annually by MLA through a competitive grant process. The purpose of this fellowship is to fund research aimed at expanding the research knowledgebase, linking the information services provided by librarians to improved health care and advances in biomedical research.

Students are encouraged to submit an essay on why they believe biotechnology will change the future of therapeutics and scientific endeavors. Essays should be no more than 250 words and include a video of 3 minutes or less detailing accomplishments and interests.

American Medical Resource Institute (AMRI) is bringing back the annual scholarship program for students pursuing a career in the healthcare industry. This includes nurses, EMT’s, physicians, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals. One applicant will be awarded $1,000 for completing a 2000-word essay covering one of two healthcare topics. A winner will be chosen on merit.

IMPORTANT DATES Applications Accepted: February 10, 2017 - January 29, 2018 Final Award Selection: March 15, 2018 Scholarship Awarded: Spring Quarter 2018 REQUIREMENTS The Healthcare Leaders Scholarship is offered to students entering or currently pursuing an educational program related to nursing or medicine. Applicant must be a US citizen, at least 17 years of age, and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. All applicants must submit a 600 to 1,000-word essay explaining what they hope to accomplish during their career in the medical field and how the scholarship would fulfill those goals. Recommended topics are included in the Personal Essay section. All applications must be received by January 29th, 2018. Finalists will be notified in February and must provide proof of enrollment and GPA (letters of acceptance, transcripts, etc.) before the scholarship recipient is selected. SELECTION Applications will be reviewed by a panel. The winner will be selected based on the criteria set forth in the requirements section of this document. Once the winner is decided and notified of the award, he/she will receive a mailed 1099-MISC tax form and the check will be delivered to their address. The winner of the scholarship award will be fully responsible for the taxes incurred from receiving the award.

To qualify, candidates must be: - African-American, Hispanic/Latino, or America Indian; - a U.S. citizen or permanent residents of the U.S.; - a full-time student at an accredited college, university, or community college; - high academic achievers in chemistry or chemical science (GPA 3.0 or better; - able to demonstrate evidence of financial need according to the FAFSA form (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). - a high school senior, college freshman, sophomore or junior intending to or already majoring in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering or a chemically-related science and planning a career in the chemical sciences or chemical technology.

The Asian Pacific Community Fund partners with Verizon to financially assist students in their pursuit of higher education as they face the challenge of significantly rising costs of obtaining a college degree. These awards will support those who excel academically, are leaders amongst their peers and are making a positive impact in their communities.
